Maybe Ben wanted to kill everyone on the island and wanted to skip out before they all died and just figured the O6 would die on the boat since he already had Michael primed to blow it up.

the consequences were temporarily avoided by leaving the island. this is why ben turns the wheel, to escape the wrath of jacob. however, he knows he must return, he was simply delaying the inevitable, or concocting a plan to stop the consequences.

i think its either deception, because christian or locke knew ben would do it. Or benipulation to get to where widmore is for revenge of his daughters killing. There is never a simple answer on lost, so ben just didnt do it because thats that. There is more reasoning to be done here.

Ben moved the island because widmore now knows where it is. Thats it. Now, the bigger question, maybe even moreso than why, but is did christian REALLY tell this to locke, and if so, was ben really meant to move it?

You raise some valid points but someone had to move the island. I don't think it was a consequence of sommoning smokey.

Although it'll be interesting to find out more about this monster that has had us wondering since the very first episode!

Well someone had to move the island at that point so maybe when Ben summoned Smokey it was his punishment to move the island rather than let someone else do it.??

I'm not sure that the consequence of Ben summoning Smokey was for him to move the island.

At the time the island was under severe attack and moving the island was a way to protect it. I doubt under the cirumstances that moving the island was purely a consequence of Ben summoning Smokey.

I do like the connection though, but I'm not sure if this is the case :)
