You explained it succinctly. Personally, I'm sticking with the Locke BEING the Island Chief (perhaps until Jack takes over) rather than it being an awful mistake - but it being an awful mistake is such a juicy plot angle. . .! For what it’s worth, I think this is the single most pivotal and dramatic notion that Lost could introduce about everything we’ve seen so far.
