so the more i spoke of..i started doing a little digging on our friend…Mr.Eko. Hehe..im seriously giddy over this. He composed several books. One called something like..’the name of the rose’ another about delaying the apocolypse.. And another about…

  4. Thanks AES, I didn’t know I had stumbled onto anything other than what I had. Just wikied Umberto Eco and Focault Pendulum and got an overview of the book.

Needless to say, I know why you were so intrigued.

I feel the writers, must be drawing on this in some respect, because they use so many literary references in their story telling.

It almost sounds like it could play into the story line in some regard.

  6. I wish I had read the book. Seems like you have. I’m at a disadvantage, to discuss properly. I’ll have to do some more research, and absorb the concept and its implications.

If this is correct, then it might be paramount.

JACOB VAN EYCK…and i might be, maybe i just dont know it yet…or maybe i read a couple articles that are wrong or made up and this is all just babble, signifigance, or luck. Either way, great discussion and if you find any ground to stand on, or theory stomping evidence, let me know.. Its not that i hope im wrong, its not that its too easy (because it was not), its just nuts.

one quick correction.the main character does have a name..Roberto. He somehow (havent read it) shipwrecks..on a ship. While passed out, had a dream (flashbacks, hmm) about a man who he met before and played a recorder (flute), the man was blind, and HE was nameless, but the character is named after Jacob Van Eyck, who was a composer and recorder.

when the man awakes on the ship, he starts to go mad because he can hear the sounds of the flute and song the man was playing almost calling to him.

the true twist and plot point is discovering his ‘evil twin’ is actually a figment of his imagination. We continue to discover that he was a coping mechinism for roberto to deal with the real world.

his flashbacks, which is what they are referred to on many sites are NOT in chronological order. It is described as a book on truth, faith, finding ones true self, and finding meaning to ones life.

A.E.S. - We know Lost has references with other literature and they’ve been discussed loads of times before, I don’t see this as anything different.

You’ve picked up on another great reference that has lots of connections with Lost and as far as I can see this isn’t spoilerish because, even though there seems to be some connection, we know that Lost isn’t going to outright steal a story from somewhere else.

This is speculation on something you’ve found so I see this as more of a theory than a spoiler.

I hope everyone else who reads this sees it that way.

  30. Hi emzi, I am so relieved you feel this way. It felt like we might be revealing the secret of who put the caramilk into Cadbury’s. lol

OK that’s it, you’ve just ruined Lost for me!

Only kidding. Nice job by all of you! If L&C have read these two books (and it does seem that there are a lot of parallels with Lost) then it can only make the show that much better if you’ve read them. I might have to pick up both of them in the near future! Again, nice job to both of you!

I’m not as savvy as you all but am loving this connection, especially with the themes in the book — like it’s all a game invented by two people, with a mysterious third entity involved. (I’m sticking with my Sawyer in S5E1 comparison here.)

Please do write a theory! Draw some of those connections out that tie together Desmond and Hawking, as well as the power-struggle between Ben and Widmore and the island.

Knights Templar…holy grail…any connection to Richard’s immortality and Locke’s probably resurrection/reincarnation? It just doesn’t seem epic if it doesn’t include the Holy Grail (stay tuned for possible Ark of the Convent (just kidding) ).
