Desmond, The Ring, Charlie and Aaron

To be honest no matter how much I try to figure out the physics behind the whole time loop theory, my head ends up hurting. But I have a half baked theory which might be important, however as it is derived from the whole time loop theory, and now my head is messed up thinking about it and I need a fresh pair of eyes.
Earlier in the show, we see Desmond picking the ring for Penny, and then deciding not to take it, due to the influence of Eloise. And then on the Island Charlie gives a ring to Aaron. Then later Desmond and Penny have a son Charlie. Let’s just take a step back and try to connect these similar points. Desmond ended up pressing the numbers, which then by not pressing them, brought the oceanic flight including Charlie to the Island. I think maybe in a different time loop Desmond picked the ring, gave it to Penny, their son was born (our very own Charlie Pace?). And then Charlie came to the Island and gave this to Aaron. And I know this is confusing as I have just confused myself. But Charlie had been given extended life, (even though he eventually died) to Desmond to warn that boat was not Penny’s. But can I add he might have unconsciously given him time to give Aaron the ring which may/may not have meant to happen. This could have altered the time loop. Maybe this is why Aaron is extra important. Aaron receiving/not receiving that ring is part of time loop which in different events play out. It’s a bit the chicken and the egg, but the whole symbol of the ring and time loop theory is in my head. Also in reference to this is Sun receiving Jin’s ring. It was supposed to stop her from coming back to the Island, but ended up making her come.

    Hello Stephanie!

Great post. Great pickup about the deeper meanings of the rings.

The whole idea of rings is that of symbolic union. A group (or school) ring. An engagement ring followed by a wedding ring to seal the deal. The family crest (DS for Dexter Stratton) that is passed on from father to son.

Yes I think you are on to something important. Starting at the end of season 3 the writers have been including ring symbolism in Lost.

Every action Charlie poses after Desmond saves him from his initial fated death has some small consequence. The ring probably has a more symbolic meaning, but the Charlie-Aaron relationship has become one of filial kinship after that gift. Odd that we never see young or baby Aaron with that ring again. Maybe Kate has it and will give it to Aaron at some future date. Or did Claire find it and guess its importance?

I’ll be looking foreward to seeing how that plays out.

    Good thoughts.

Rings connect people, so Jin’s ring was supposed to re-connect him with Sun. (:

I can’t think of little Charlie Hume being anyone else but little Charlie Hume, but it would be really sweet if he was and passed it on to future generations.

    Andre,
Aaron never got the ring, because when Claire (or someone else, don’t remember) picked him up to leave the camp, the ring was left in the craddle, since she didn’t notice it or even knew Charlie had given it to Aaron . So, I assume the ring is still somewhere around the island.

Doesn’t she return to the beach later with Jack while awaiting the helicopter to return? Isn’t she present at some point while Hurley is doing a cannonball?

I wrote what I remembered regarding the last time I saw Charlie’s ring.
My memory isn’t the best, but I don’t recall her going back to the beach with Jack, she stayed with Locke, right? If I’m missing something, then I apologize. But, still, I don’t think she found the ring either way or else they would have shown us that.
And, as many other times in Lost, they usually make distant connections with little details across different seasons, so we’ll probably see the ring again for some reason (:
