lol Missus, I knew you would be protective over your man Sawyer!

Yes, in part Sawyer was thinking about 'keeping cover', by not letting out Jack's true occupation. However, he also enjoyed giving him a 'royal' spanking too! Whatta man, whatta man, whatta mighty, mighty good man!

I don't think Sawyer and Kate will get back together... There does seem to be some awkwardness between them right now but I think it's just Sawyer trying to find the best way to tell her that she has man shoulders and he never noticed it before...

Excellent read Dabs! I've come to this too late to add much to the discussion except to say I don't see Sawyer as having been that vindictive towards Jack. I think circumstances would not allow him to give Jack a special role as that would give the game away that these are not 'real' DI recruits...

It will be interesting to see how things play out with Kate as well. There is definitely unfinished business there.

AES, you make a very good point about Jack and Locke in this scenario!

I don't see Sawyer bending to Jack's wishes anytime soon! I think it would have to take John Locke's re-emergence onto the scene to convince Sawyer, (who presently believes Locke is dead), that he is being unreasonable, and to put his differences aside.

The same should be said for Jack. He will be very surprised to see Locke resurrected.

Locke has always tried to convince Jack to do the right thing, and point him down the right path. Although, Sawyer had his differences with Locke, seeing Locke come back to life, ought to set him straight, in a real hurry!

Perhaps, Jack needs to suffer a little humiliation at the hands of Sawyer! It might help solidify what his true purpose is, when it finally unfolds.

Until John Locke comes back, Sawyer & Jack are destined to lock horns, and do battle!

Jack is only doing, what Daddy has beat into his head, prove people wrong. Jack did something, that regardless of the consequences, no one else could do. Got off the island. It obviously didnt work out for him, because as Sawyer said, 'look where it got ya..'
But this is Jacks role. Jack has been put down his whole life. Being a spinal sugeon has taught him patience and intelligence in dissecting his problem. His fathers degrading has taught him how to prevail in ngativity. He has been left by the woman he loved, Sarah, all because he needs something to 'fix' all the time.
HIS JOB IS TO FIX THINGS.
I think his Shephard name may mean more, but it is not his destiny. His hero/leader roles overlap in the past because he didnt understand. He's a man of his word, and he said he would get everyone off the island. He said he would lead them. His visions of his father haunted him because he knew, that his happiness meant nothing, because he broke his promise.
Poor Jack. He didnt have to come back. Mr Lafleur walks the walk now, but he is in the dark on things that have not happened yet. I think it may take Locke's return to sway Sawyer. To make him understand that what he is doing is not right either. He knows that Locke was willing to sacrifice himself to save them, and may allow more influence from him than Jack the workman.
And John knows that Jack has a more signifigant role to play, than cleaning up after Sawyer.

Oh and if Jack starts muttering "whatever happened, happened..." then I'll know that its game over for him. He's not going to buy into that, I just have a feeling...

Sohrshah - I get what you are saying about Jack's belief that he is doing "the right thing" and the example of him with Christian in the OR is a good one. I just think that Jack has taken this desire to the point of arrogance, and has misused this desire into a determination that becomes HIS way, rather than it just being "the right thing." That is the interesting place that he is at now.

Back on the island, people have died, they are in a timeline and situation where death and disaster is right around the corner (since we know what is coming). There is an incident, a purge, and all the while...now a missing 316 plane from his perspective. There is also a fragile situation between Dharma and the Hostiles/Others.

Jack's inclination to do the "right thing" is going to be put to the ultimate test.

At least last time on island, they began with simply the group from 815 and then started to discover who else was on the island. His ability to lead the people, or solve issues, or take the reigns in deciding where to go, etc. was much simpler, in a way.

I don't necessarily think he was thankful or relieved to not have to lead, I think it builds this tension that the guy can not NOT just let everything happen around him without him trying to get involved.

I truly hope that this is the opportunity for Jack to redeem himself. It sure seems like it is since we know he has a greater purpose and connection on island.

sohrshah, I don't think anyone hates Jack, at least I know I don't.

I agree with what you have to say about Jack, in terms of his readiness to accept some responsibility of a different nature.

Many of us, have had to sit back and keep out thoughts to ourselves, because of the 'hero worship' status given to Jack by his loyal fans.

Forgive us, in our little moment of indulging in delight! At heart, Sawyer may still be and may always be a con man, but he reached 'hero' status of his own, by having 'the stones' to put Jack in his place!

If that makes him a jerk, I am okay with that for the moment!

Jack will once again, 'dance' in the sun at some point.

Pierre: "Mr. Shephard, may I have a word with you?"

Jack: "It's Doctor Shephard."

Pierre: "Yeah, right! That is so cute! You're very special, little guy... but seriously, get over here and clean this up. By bunnies came into contact with each other and blew up! Rabbit guts everywhere! I guess you could say they had a little 'incident'... ha ha... get to work!"
