Ok, this completely blows my little parallel universe thing out of the water, but hey, thats what a show that makes absolutely no sense is about. The watchers coming up with different theories. Maybe this was already explained, maybe not. I have a pretty bad memory.
Is it possible that the “list” that is created are the people that little Ben and Ethen remember from their pasts? This would mean that ben is given a lot of information as a child. He would be able to know things like when the plane is going to crash and a lot of other things. This would also explain why he sent Ethen specifically instead of someone else.
I am not saying there is a “time loop”. I think that whatever happens with the current losties happens. But they ARE in the past, so there has to be some mingling between them which will shape the future as it happens in the first few seasons.

Like the idea although he sent Goodwin to the tail section to look for other survivors. I think these 2 were just people he could rely on to get him the information and blend in with the survivors.
Surely he’d remember Jin seen as though he seems to have lived with him for 3 years so far.
By me saying that it sort of goes against my idea that this is the forst time around for the loop

I like it bejayel or can I call you BJ for short lol. just kidding. anyway ben may also know the people hes after are in the front end and he sends Ethen to that one. He sends Goodwin to the tail end because he probably is told by Julieete that hes te one responsible of killing him blah blah….however this now in my eyes doesn’t make Ben a bad person but someone that isn’t trying to interfere with the time line….he seems cold because nothings a shock to him but he knows he has to stick to the path….ie always having a plan. this could also be the reason for Bens emotional instability because imagine that no matter what, you knew you had to do things a certain way even if every fibre in your body told you not to do something you knew for the greater good you had to. eg watch your daughter die.

It would explain why Ben seems to know so much in seasons 2-4.

He could know when the crash happened because someone who traveled back to 77 told him.
Or he could have just wanted a list to take to Jacob so he can tell him who to bring back and who might eventually pass “the test”…
or you could be right

TehIgnored, i dont think Ben knew this. You look at the scene again and he reacts instictively as a leader does, if he has prior knowledge of the future then i doubt he’s send his surgeon who im sure the Losties would have told him that he’d died.
As you said though you could be right

Why don’t the 815′ers know what’s going to happen to them in 2004? If they all were together in 1977 and lived their lives, why don’t THEY know about future events like Ben seems to? Is it as simple as “Ben is special?”
