Why Desmond Will Return, He is Faraday’s Constant

In Faraday’s notebook in S03E20 it is revealed Desmond is his constant. I therefore predict in 1974-1977 Faraday’s mind jumps about time also, why don’t you think he remembers his research, this is the main time period in which he is carrying it out. Desmond is his constant, this reveals why Desmond returns. Perhaps we will see 2007 Faraday visits Desmond because Faraday’s mind has jumped back from 1977, because Faraday, has also been exposed to huge levels of radiation in dealing with the bomb and perhaps building the Swan. Then Desmond returns.

The reason why Faraday must take action and not just ‘know’ Desmond is his constant is because he hasn’t contacted Desmond in 1974-77, and needs to to have something to stick to in the equation, Desmond also has to remember and acknowledge him, like Penny did when Desmond contacted her on the freighter. This is because what makes up a person is their memory, and therefore for a constant to be a person, the subject of the equation must be in their memory.

I believe ‘The Variable’ will be a Faraday episode, it contrasts to ‘The Constant’ title wise, and works together much like Faraday and Desmond. This is where we shall encounter this and learn more about what Faraday has got up to.

How old was Desmond in 1977? Probably about seven or so… I think Daniel is going to have his work cut out for him…

Oh, my last response from your original theory… you assume that Daniel Faraday is responsible for the Orchid Station but we don’t know that. We saw Dan at the Orchid site once before but he was just a worker… he looked like he might not have belonged there at all. Pierre Chang didn’t even seem to recognize him.

Daniel can come to Desmond in 2007, it doesn’t matter, aslong as he makes contact with a Desmond in 1974-1977. He may be responsible he may not, but I am sure he played a role in physics experimentation on the Island, and his mind clearly jumps from future to past, or he could not of remembered how to make time travel work, or maybe he is even the beginning of the causality.

    What is “the causality”?

The beginning of any time loop, like a piece of string that bends about all over the place.

Sorry on the title I meant to say ‘Desmond is Faraday’s Constant’.

Oh, so you believe there is a time loop?

No, please don’t get confused with that theory. I mean a loop like in a race track, turnings and knots, events, pivotal points, i.e the loops for Faraday being going from 2004 - 1980s - ancient times - 1950s - 1974. Imagine vectors across space time, that is the loop.

Travelling through time at an un-natural rate, backwards forwards, is a loop.

If that’s what you meant then I would suggest never calling it a loop again. For one people will think you’re talking abou tthe time loop theory that doesn’t make sense and also, what you’re describing doesn’t really resemble a loop.

Yes . . well the english language of which I am an expert would agree with me. A loop in a string.

Do you know what pedantic means?

If it were a loop they would go forward then travel back then resume forward movement then go back again… but really, the only move along the timeline forward but flash instantly forward and back. It’s really more like a broken line with the pieces moved to overlap each other.

And the loop part kind of makes it seem like it’s continuous… like it just keeps happening over and over… but that really isn’t the case…

    The first definition is this:

    loop

doesn’t really feel like anything new in this post. desmond returns for other reasons yet to be shown, perhaps because ben may have exacted revenge on widmore and took penny’s or young charlies life.

  18. A pedantic type is overly concerned with minute details and takes a condescending tone when talking to people, and they come across as antagonistic . . . they also can’t admit that they don’t know something or are confused by something.
Some people need to be reminded that Lost is just a t.v. show and that most people can recognize an asshole when they read one.
    I agree with ya joshmohoboob.

Thank you wilma, username and highbrow you have to admit you don’t know what will happen. I’ve read your theories and they are much more speculative than mine. Mine are based upon real hardcore evidence and what I believe will be seen as a ‘foreshadow’ in S04E05. Time will tell, there are many possibilities, but if you get it wrong I want you to admit it and I will also.

And username you should really read my post more clearly, none of what I’ve written had been recorded in any forum. Everyone seems to think Penny will play a pivotal role in making Desmond return, which may be a factor but I also believe Faraday will play a role.

hi josh, sorry if i came across that way, what i was saying is there is nothing new to the fact that desmond and faraday are constants.

now your idea is a valid one and maybe the case, but i suspect you built it on the spoiler link i will post here, especially your last reference. so if you are going to position your theory as unique, at least reference the source.

  22. des does’nt qualify to be faraday’s constantThey only met breifly a couple of times.they don’y know each other well enough.I think faraday has made a mistake in thinking this.faraday is a secondary character that will be killed off soon enough……..
