How the smoke monster was created
The earliest appearance of the smoke monster chronologically speaking was when Rousseau and her crew landed on the island and approached the exterior ruins of the temple, sixteen years prior to the crash of flight 815.

Then why are there carvings in the smoke monster’s lair from *apparently* Egpytian times… roughly 5000 years ago that show the smoke monster pretty much in the form we know him in, hanging out with Anubis?

I thought the smoke monster was there a long time, and Richard said somthing about the fence Darma built would keep smokie out but not them. So Darma built fence cause the were scared shxxxxxxss of old smokie.
