Yeah I do think the whole point of the Swan was to have control over the magnetic energy. Basically, that was the whole point of the Swan to begin with. Then the Incident happens and instead of getting to do the "fun" experiments they wanted to, they ended up having to dedicate the whole hatch to just maintaining the stupid thing. The fail-safe releases all of the energy in a controlled manner, imploding the hatch. Basically I guess, the mass material of the hatch itself neutralized whatever was left of the energy. Why dedicate decades to maintaining the Swan?

Well, they really only had three options:

1. Let the thing to what it does, which is probably cause time travel problems, make people not have babies, drop airplanes out of the sky, you name it.

2. Destroy it through a controlled implosion releasing most of the energy in one burst.

3. Maintain it by cycling through build-ups of power.

The 3rd option also gives them the room to continue to do some limited experiments with the magnetism. The fail-safe system allows them to safely neutralize the whole system. So why maintain the hatch with a push button and a hard to remember button? That's easy, it's an insurance policy. If anyone else was to take over the island or kill all of the Dharma folks, then the Swan would go into melt-down-the-Earth mode and destroy everything. If you have to physically have a man pushing a button to "save the world", then even those crazy Hostiles are not likely to mess with that man. And who better to put in that whole than Mr. Anal himself, Radzinsky.

It's going to have to be one heck of a creative answer... The DHARMA Initiative had the ability to safely (mostly) release that energy all along? Why the heck did they instll that computer with the button and have someone sit there all that time when they had that failsafe there all along? I have a theory out there about the incident that I think it still relevant (minus the part about the incident being planned... I guess that's still possible)...

My thought has always been that what happened to DESmond was a controled release of the energy, while the 'incident' is an uncontroled release. To me, this means that while imploding that Swan station caused DESmond's conscience to shift through time. Maybe the 'incident' causes many individuals consciences to shift through time?

Turning the failsafe released all the energy at once. It blew the concrete cap that was poured over it away. So this seems to me a really big hole in the show.

the point of the swan was to reduce the amount of electro magnetism which was abundent on and around the island.if people mess with the donkey wheel, which they should'nt then things would be sort of ok,but crazy people like ben and locke just can't help themselves.like monkeys they are.now with no swan and a donkey wheel which anyone can just "play with" its sending everything haywire.none of these guys are gonna fix what aint broke.ben, the biggest liar on the show tells the oceanic six to go back so derrrrr...they do.....oh my god(none of these people have the brains they were born with).the solution is simple...aint it?DESTROY THE DONKEY WHEEL........its just so obvious.don't blow it up, just break it.....

I believe the energy is canceled out with the explosion Faraday said detonating the H-bomb would "kill" the energy, therefore blowing up the hatch must of had close to the same effect.

Well, really bad is relative I suppose. Remember, Daniel came back with a mission... to stop the future from happening. "Really bad" could be an incident that twists and time and puts people from the past into the future, and makes it so nobody can have babies, and gives children born on the island real BAD headaches, creates a future where Charlotte dies, pulls airplanes out of the sky, etc.

The idea of a fail safe (ie. turning the key) to me, means it wouldn't release the full effect of whatever the fail safe is for. A safer alternative. True Des turning the key did release the energy, however I beleive it caused a 'controlled' release of energy. Had he not turned it after the button wasn't pushed I believe the result would have been exactly as bad as Faraday makes it out to be.
