She was dying from cancer before Kate arrived on the island. But when Kate was going through her court case after the O6 was rescued, her mother visited her and said "My doctors have given me six months to live for the last four years." This to me suggests that Jacob had a hand in prolonging her mums life. I also had a thought the other day about when Jack fixed Sarah. What if it wasn't Jack who fixed her, but Jacob? A similar thing happened with Kates mum.

She goes and visits Jack during a funeral type service for Christian after they are rescued. There she tells him about how she was "involved" with Christian at one point and how Jack has a half sister, Claire. I have no idea how or why she was able to wake from her coma... hope this helped a little...
