Fight…destroy…and corrupt…?

Achalli wrote a simple theory entitled “The “why” of Rchard Alpert”, which initially got me thinking deep in Lost for the first time in a while.

This is in regards to the men and monster listed in the title, and how they connect…

Jacob met Richard long ago.
Richard is, from past Lost episodes, a strong possibility of being a former BlackRock passenger, so we will play that angle.

Richard arrives on the island… after of course, a quick visit from the “great man” himself, Jacob off island(possibly even being told he needs him for something). And most certainly blessing/apologizing, and a quick touch.

He knows he must get aboard the ship, something I imagine will cost him something very important. And he knows he is supposed to do something…he just doesnt know what. This sound familiar? So he does what many Losties do, and that is get stuck on the god foresaken island.

He meets Jacob again, and upon meeting him is met with an understanding that his “destiny” is yet to come…so what does he do…he waits…and waits…and waits…and waits…and truthfully…I think he is still waiting.

I know Achalli had a great thought that Jacob had Richard assist him in capturing MIB, and that is why he gave him the gift of immortality. There is a rising debate of whether immortailty given to Richard is a gift…or a punishment, but I think that could only be decided by the bearer of the power…Richard himself.

I think when we learn Richard Alpert’s back story, we will learn that he is not only the most patient islander we know, but possibly even the saddest story of anyone on the island. Whether king or peasant from the past, or even the future, I believe we will see the cold, ageless man lovingly care about someone in his story.
I believe his journey will begin as many Losties have, by trying to either escape…or find something/someone. By the time of his arrival to the island, I would imagine he doesnt have any family to return to, any relatives or friends waiting. He has no reason to leave the island. He has no reason to fight. He is Jacobs best chance of accomplishing his mission of proving MIB wrong.
That when “they” come… “They” dont fight, “They” dont destroy…”They” dont corrupt…

Richard Alpert is Jacobs chosen one.

Some theorized he will be Jacobs body, or maybe he will be Jacobs voice vengance…I actually think more than anything, Richard will turn out to be Jacobs voice.

Richard is known for holding empty hands when in threatening situations.
With Young Ben in the Jungle.
With Dharma upon “LaFleur’s” arrival.
With Sawyer and Kate bringing Ben into the Jungle.
And most importantly with Faraday pointing a gun straight in his face.

I don’t believe MIB is necessarily bad, or Jacob good. I believe like most mysteries on Lost, and in the strange world we live in ourselves, it is more a matter of opinion, belief, or even faith if you will.
The people Jacob and MIB discuss are not the people of Black Rock, or even 815…just people in general.
MIB believes that people arriving to the island that possess the power of “ours” will lead to destruction…bottom line. He believes they will gain power and knowledge, and fight, corrupt, and destroy themselves.
Jacob believes that people will be capable of coinciding with such a power. Jacob believes that man will not fight, destroy, and corrupt. Jacob believes that MIB is wrong. And Ricardus is the first one in our story, that Jacob chose to prove MIB wrong.

It seems as if MIB is protecting the island, and Jacob protects the people. Both seem willing to sacrifice, fight, and die for what they believe…and whoever it is that turns out to be correct, will most likely not only make the decision of what Richard Alperts true purpose is, but if what Jacob did to him is a gift…or a punishment.

Abbot Enheduanna Schwarzschild Name meaning: -Abbot: Father defined by or in religious connotation/definition. From the beginning, Lost was riddled with religious tone and it was obvious it would play some sort of role. Seemed fitting to start here. -Enheduanna: Mesopotamian High Priestess and the modern civilization’s first recorded poet. I created the name after season 1. John explaining backgammon history to Walt spawned the idea that the island may have a link yo the beginning of civilization and maybe even time itself. It was “poetic” and important to add this to my pseudonym. I needed the mother of poetry in modern civilization to match the religious “Father” in my first name. -Schwarzschild: Reference to Karl Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild Black Holes. Smoke monsters, hatches, and curing paralysis doesn’t point to black holes…but the sci-fi elements ran deep and obvious. The wheel moving the island and transporting Ben felt like it got plucked from my imagination. A.E.S.

  1. AES, this is good, really good. You picked up on a really unique angle to Richard. There are so many good points that you bring up that I need to print this out and go over it well. I’ll be getting back to you with moer detailed comments. Super job on this.

  2. Great thoughts. Richard has always seemed a little sad/melancholy to me. Could you imagine the amount of heartache you’d gather from viewing an endless cycle of life and death of generations of people you care about? Yikes.

I really like the idea that Jacob made him the “control” for his “human progress” experiment.

Can’t wait to see who Richard loved so much that he accepted Jacob’s “gift”…..

  3. AES, one of the ideas that I like in your theory is that of Richard being the voice of Jacob. Sort of like Metatron being the voice of God. From all indications that is exactly what Richard’s function with in the Others is. He lets whoever the current leader happens to be know what Jacob’s wishes are and sees that they are executed.

I also like your idea that Richard is the one chosen by Jacob to prove Jacob’s point.

Thanks again for an enjoyable read.

  4. very nice theory, i like it a lot. i especially like the part about how sad he is, he does seem rather down for most of the show. it also may help explain why he takes such an interest in the people that were traveling through time. he has had to stand by and watch everyone he ever knew grow old and die, but here are these people that he meets at different times, and they never seem to age. it fascinates him and gives him hope, that maybe somewhere someone he cares about is still alive and will show up again. maybe…
anyway, great theory, i enjoyed reading it.

  5. As always, I love your theory, A.E.S. This is a really interesting take on Richard, and I agree that his story will be a very sad and essential one. Also, you mentioned that MIB and Jacob had two different viewpoints, and that reminded me of the real life John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Locke beleived that all men were basically good and did not need a structured government. Hobbes belived that all men were basically evil and needed a leader. Not really sure where I’m going with this but…

And you said that perhaps MIB protects the island while Jacob protects the people. Are you implying that maybe Jacob is protecting the people from the island?

    Great job A.E.S.!

  6. Thank you all for the comments thusfar, I appreciate them. Been a while since I posted anything so I was nervous of putting out a mirror theory or dud.

The simple logic and argument for any future disagreements is ineresting, and have been thinking about a way to include it in a theory also.

We see several people have said (all others) that Jacob/the island made them or someone else the way they are…michael not dying by the gun, Alex not dying, and I would bet with thought there are a few others…funny thing though…after they serve some sort of purpose, which seems to always be getting someone to the island…they die!

Obviously Michael held off the explosives long enough for the other losties to escape, in turn causing their eventual return.
I think that their purpose doesnt always have to be obvious.
Alex living by Bens wors to Charles that Jacob doesnt want this to happen were obviously a lie…but it led in turn to her dying at the hands of Keamy, and caused Ben to want to return to be judged, and served a purpose by being used by either Smokey or MIB to tell Ben to follow John Locke, which led to Richard finding REAL Locke, removing a bullet, and telling him he has to leave the island, bring his friends back, and die.

This whole shapeshifting thing is much, much more than what many think it is.

  7. Forgot where I was going with that last thought…

The point is…I think Richard was made that way because of Jacob…as simple as he said it himself.

I just think he is still alive because he has not actually served his true purpose…
