Forgot where I was going with that last thought...

The point is...I think Richard was made that way because of Jacob...as simple as he said it himself.

I just think he is still alive because he has not actually served his true purpose...

Thank you all for the comments thusfar, I appreciate them. Been a while since I posted anything so I was nervous of putting out a mirror theory or dud.

The simple logic and argument for any future disagreements is ineresting, and have been thinking about a way to include it in a theory also.

We see several people have said (all others) that Jacob/the island made them or someone else the way they are...michael not dying by the gun, Alex not dying, and I would bet with thought there are a few others...funny thing though...after they serve some sort of purpose, which seems to always be getting someone to the island...they die!

Obviously Michael held off the explosives long enough for the other losties to escape, in turn causing their eventual return.
I think that their purpose doesnt always have to be obvious.
Alex living by Bens wors to Charles that Jacob doesnt want this to happen were obviously a lie...but it led in turn to her dying at the hands of Keamy, and caused Ben to want to return to be judged, and served a purpose by being used by either Smokey or MIB to tell Ben to follow John Locke, which led to Richard finding REAL Locke, removing a bullet, and telling him he has to leave the island, bring his friends back, and die.

This whole shapeshifting thing is much, much more than what many think it is.

As always, I love your theory, A.E.S. This is a really interesting take on Richard, and I agree that his story will be a very sad and essential one. Also, you mentioned that MIB and Jacob had two different viewpoints, and that reminded me of the real life John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Locke beleived that all men were basically good and did not need a structured government. Hobbes belived that all men were basically evil and needed a leader. Not really sure where I'm going with this but...

And you said that perhaps MIB protects the island while Jacob protects the people. Are you implying that maybe Jacob is protecting the people from the island?

Great job A.E.S.!

very nice theory, i like it a lot. i especially like the part about how sad he is, he does seem rather down for most of the show. it also may help explain why he takes such an interest in the people that were traveling through time. he has had to stand by and watch everyone he ever knew grow old and die, but here are these people that he meets at different times, and they never seem to age. it fascinates him and gives him hope, that maybe somewhere someone he cares about is still alive and will show up again. maybe...
anyway, great theory, i enjoyed reading it.

AES, one of the ideas that I like in your theory is that of Richard being the voice of Jacob. Sort of like Metatron being the voice of God. From all indications that is exactly what Richard's function with in the Others is. He lets whoever the current leader happens to be know what Jacob's wishes are and sees that they are executed.

I also like your idea that Richard is the one chosen by Jacob to prove Jacob's point.

Thanks again for an enjoyable read.

Great thoughts. Richard has always seemed a little sad/melancholy to me. Could you imagine the amount of heartache you'd gather from viewing an endless cycle of life and death of generations of people you care about? Yikes.

I really like the idea that Jacob made him the "control" for his "human progress" experiment.

Can't wait to see who Richard loved so much that he accepted Jacob's "gift".....

AES, this is good, really good. You picked up on a really unique angle to Richard. There are so many good points that you bring up that I need to print this out and go over it well. I'll be getting back to you with moer detailed comments. Super job on this.
