Think about when someone is cremated, the ashes fit into a nice little vase-sized urn. The ash on the ground around the cabin is much, much more than that. But not a bad "stab" at a theory :) I think it is implied that the ash is from the volcano that exists(existed) on the island (info from the classroom lesson young Ben listens to). I think there was way too much ash to be produced by just one body. Think about when someone is cremated, the ashes fit into a nice little vase-sized urn.
