Or did Desmond disappear at all? In the first case, Desmond's mind leapt back in time, lived in his past for a little while and then returned to his body after it was "purified" by the Incident. In the second case, Desmond's mind left his body to relive his life but didn't leap back... it stayed there. What if Desmond's "powers" come from the fact that he has actually lived his life an infinite number of times, with the Incident being both the beginning of that loop and the end? What if the Naked Desmond is finally free from an eternity of making the same bad decisions? And what if his tagline, "See you in another life brother" is because he is vaguely aware of this... enevitable nature of his life? I always wanted to think that when Richard took little Ben to be "healed" - all he really did was pluck the copy of little Ben from the parallel universe accessible via the temple - but then I thought it was weird that the plucked version had the same gunshot wound.
