Where Did the Names Come From?

I have read a lot of theories on the names, but none of them talked about where the names originally came from. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  1. These are things we have heard about the names…

1.) They were written by Jacob (if you trust MIB on this)
2.) They are a list of “candidates”
3.) The “candidates” are people who may be able to take over Jacob’s role to the island
4.) Almighty Richard himself knew nothing about this…. hmmm?

Ok, so 4 doesn’t really matter, I just find it really strange.

    But I digress…

Based off of these 4 (ok 3) things, I think that Jacob somehow went searching for humans he believed could fill his role, and then slowly brought each of them to the island. He watched and studied them for years. The last six candidates (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) seem to be his last hope. Since, he is now dead he can’t bring anyone else to the island…so if his replacement is not one of these six (well now 4) people he’s SOL.

Wow, I don’t think I answered your question at all.

  2. I think Jacob did put the names there, and it’s pretty obvious he did not meet the candidates by accident (waiting for Locke to break his back). This would indicate that he’s been studying them for quite some time, as sarajs16 said, and was probably just waiting for the precise moment to touch each of them. Perhaps Jacob doesn’t have free will and can only see and do what he is supposed to do? Maybe that is why he always points out everyone elses ability to make a choice?

  3. For Jacob to know when and where to be to ‘touch’ the losties lives he had to have had pre knowledge. So has Jacob seen the future? Are the names and numbers like the compass, have no real beginning, they are because Jacob saw them be important in the future so touched them to make them important in the future.

  4. I’ve always thought that Jacob could see the flow of time. What would happen, and what he could do to manipulate things to turn out the way he wanted. Why would he need a replacement? He knew he was going to die even back in the Black Rock era, and when MiB says he is going to find the loophole he needs to kill him, he kinda sounds like he is always aquiesced to the idea that he is going to die eventually.

I also think that MiB has similar abilities to Jacob, and was able to see what he needed to do in order to get Locke in the situation he needed him to be……dead and on the island.

  5. Can someone post a nice still shot of the cave with the names?

The reason I ask is that Hurley picked up the numbers from Leonard Simms, a patient in the mental hospital with him, and I would like to see if Simms is on the wall!

  6. It’s interesting that Bram and Ilana know about candidates but Alpert doesn’t. (Bram asks Ilana if she thinks Lapedus is ‘a candidate’ … she doesn’t actually answer him, just shows him Flocke.)

People mention ‘no kate’ – but maybe she has a different name. She seems to have lots of ’em. Janssen would be her real last name if Wayne’s her dad … or maybe her maiden name … (of course then she wouldn’t be one of THE numbers)

The list you mention is at: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Cave

  7. Thank you for the link to the cave info! I noticed Littleton (Claire’s last name) appears twice

    115 – Littleton
    313 – Littleton

Aaron and Claire? I wonder what this means for Aaron’s future…

That same page mentions a blinking red light in Jacob’s cave and suggests it is a production error, but lots of the Dharma stations had cameras (and that is what it looks like to me, see the photo on the website) so maybe there is a camera in Jacob’s cave.
