i have literally just watched the episodes in question... and... ben said that the sub is the only way off the island, (and locke blew that up), but he also said that once that sub leaves the island (with jack and juliet on it) they would never be able to get back to the island as the communication between the island and real world were not working since turning of the fail safe..but... locke blew the sub up BEFORE he saw Anthony cooper, and althought that doesnt mean that the sub couldnt have got cooper, brought him back and ben could then wait for locke to blow up the sub.. unless we actually believe ben when he says, if the sub leaves, it can come back..

this probably makes no sense as i am tired...

interesting.

Not to say i agree, but it could be possible, as Anthony Cooper tells locke he was in a car accident and next thing he knew he was on the island, a little reminiscent of Flocke telling Ilana the last thing he remembered was dying, So in order for MIB to impersonate Cooper, the others brought his dead body to the island?

Personally i think it was actually Anthony Cooper, and i think its going to be important that it was Sawyer who killed him and not Locke.

I really like it...
Good thought... and soooo obviouse if you think about it.

And about the body: We don't know if Anthony Coopers body is on the island or not . ..

I found it always strange, that Ben says to Richard: Get the man from Talahasse and a few hours later Anthony sits in the Cell. Even with all the special abilities on the island that would have been nearly impossible to pull off.

Interesting thought, one question for you. It appears as if the smoke monster needs to have a body on the island in order to take someone's form. Take Alex as I think there is some consensus that the scene with her and Ben is actually smokie. Her deceased body was physically on the island. A few more examples: Christian Shepherd, Yemi, and Locke.

I can only think of a few counterexamples and I think I can explain them. One is the black horse Kate and Sawyer. However, we have no reason to assume this was actually the smoke monster.

The other is from the same episode when Sawyer speaks to Kate as if he was her father. In this case, no physical image is assumed, so no body would be needed.

Another possibility would be Hurley's imaginary friend Dave. We have no reason to assume his body is on the island, but his appearance is only in the imagination of Hurley. nobody else can see him but Hugo. Everyone can see the Smokie/Locke personality.

One more could be the on-island aparations of Walt (to Shannon/Sayid and later to Locke). Because Walt is confirmed to be alive and off island at the time of his appearances, it may mean Smoike can do it without a body. However, the fact that he's alive suggests that it is actually not Smokie.

As much as I like it, it seems the only way your idea would be possible would be for Cooper's body to have somehow been brought to the island.

I didn't forget that Sawyer killed him, I was guessing that perhaps Cooper was already dead, a la Locke before he gets taken over, and when Sawyer killed him, MIB/Smokie relinquished the body. As in when whoever is done with Locke's body, it too will be lifeless as he was dead before being possessed.

I must have missed the magical box metaphor and that's just great. Guess I'll have to watch Lost for the fourth time.

you are forgetting that sawyer actually killed anthony cooper in that episode. So it couldnt have been MIB. Not to mention the others later said that the "magical box" was a metaphor.
