First, I will do the disclaimer, forgive me if anyone has already mentioned this in a theory, because I have not had time to read everyone’s posts, I just really want to know what people think about this.
Jacob has never been in the cabin. It has always been MIB or another entity that has been trapped in the cabin by a circle of ash. This entity was known to be there by the others and that is why Ben led Locke there–I think he was hoping the entity would kill Locke and take him out of the picture. Instead, Locke hears “Help me”, (because of course, we now know that Locke has been used this whole time for a greater agenda, ever since Smoky got a look at him) and this rattles Ben even more. Now he knows that something wants Locke there. I think that is when he tries to kill him himself.
I think that the Others, Richard’s people, need dead bodies. When their people were killed by the 1977 Losties, right before the Losties came to Dharma, the only way to keep the wrath of the Others from coming down on Dharma was to hand over their fallen comrade to the Others. Bodies are definitely important–I think that when Richard took Ben to “heal” him, he took him to the spring and the same thing that happened to Sayid happened to Ben–he was killed, but a different spirit was allowed to live. I can’t remember the exact quote, but something along the lines of “He won’t be one of you” or “he will be ours” or “he will be forever changed”. I don’t think that Sayid will be Sayid anymore.
Maybe Richard doesn’t age because that is not his original body? But Ben continued to age…..I will have to think about that some more.

Richard said “he won’t remember anything, his innocence will be lost and he will be one of us (an other) forever.”

I do believe at one time or another that it was definately Jacob’s cabin & Jacob stayed there. Why would Llana go there first? It seemed she was looking for Jacob & went to the Cabin first & that leads me to believe that she has some knowledge where to find Jacob.
I understand your reasoning after we seen the circle of ‘mysterious ash’ repel Smokie & that would probably be the best way to contain or imprison Smokie but I just dont see it.
Oh & when Llana is inside the cabin she finds a piece of Jacob’s Tapestry hung up on the wall by what looks like the same knife that Jacob uses to gut the fish on the beach to eat in the beginnng of season 5 while talking to MIB & looking out at a ship.

That Ash could of been used to keep smokie out of the cabin but it does make sense since the man inside is asking for help. An I dont think that Ash can imprison a good spirit like Jacob the same way it does smokie but who knows & now you helped think of another theory but I need to think it through. Thanks Odette.

Who’s to say Richards ability to never age comes from that spring? We only know that Sayid & Ben have gone through this & im not even sure 100% that Ben went through the same process Sayid did, most likely but we didnt see it exactly. Was young Ben wet or drying off or something like that when we see him in the tent after he is taken to the temple?

Richard told Locke (MIB) in reply to his comment about Richard no aging, “I’m this way because of Jacob”. I think there’s more to it than just dipping him in the fountain. I have no doubt that the fountain was supposed to heal the injuries especially after seeing Dogen cut his hand and dip it in the water to test it.
Since Ben was presumably dipped in the fountain when he was young and continued to age afterward it would suggest that the fountain isn’t the reason Richard doesn’t age. (Or it could mean that Ben was healed in another way we haven’t seen yet. But given what we already know it would appear that the fountain isn’t involved in Richard’s condition.)

Oh, sorry. That was not very clear, looking back now. I don’t think that Richard doesn’t age because he took a dip in the spring–I think he doesn’t age because that body is not his original body–that a different spirit is in control of that body and that is why his body does not age. Though, I was wondering if maybe the spring facilitates a specific transfer of spirits when someone is not quite dead yet–like in Sayid’s and Ben’s case. Maybe instead of a spirit just grabbing any body left unburied on the island, the spring allows them to control which spirit goes into which body. I was thinking that the spring was a form of Jacob, like most of us seem to think that Smoky is related to the MIB. When someone is immersed, Jacob can take over the body.
When he died, the spring was no longer clear–which I feel showed that his spirit was no longer in it and which might be why it lost it’s healing power and of course leads me to wonder–what spirit is in Sayid now? It seemed from the Hurley/Jacob conversation that it was supposed to be Jacob, but maybe he just wanted them to go to the Temple so they would have protection from Flocke and not be fooled by his outward appearance. Everything on this show makes you go hmmmmmm. Love it!
