Women used to carry to term--even up to the Dharma days--Horace's baby was born there. Maybe it has something to do with the bomb being detonated or maybe it has something to do with the island traveling through time that messes up the gestational clocks? Someone else has posted that the Black Rock wasn't a slave ship, but a prisoner's ship, from looking at its itinerary.
