Well, two of the living candidates who have been relieved of duty are Miles and Lapidus, right? Juliet appears to have been crossed out too, before she died.

Miles used his island gifts for personal gain. Not exactly akin to the Island’s agenda.

Lapidus knew that Widmore’s plan was a hoax- thus he went against the desire of the island not to be found.

Juliet killed Others. Others are the Island’s special people.

When Locke wasn’t doing as he was “told” by the Island, he began to lose his Island gift- and perhaps his candidacy?

So you can lose your candidacy if you move against the wishes of the Island- or at least the wishes of the island as represented by Jacob.

when locke said when he saw the monster, he saw a bright light, im guessing its not smokie. smokie tries to drag him to the temple later.

Maybe Smokey recognized Locke as the one survivor who he could most easily bend to his will and eventually take on in body? He was the one who didn’t want to leave and trusted the Island.

And Chiefof16 …you’re right! That DOES make alot of sense as to why Widmore would want to exploit the island. Since he was leader of The Others at one time, I’m sure he obviously knew about the Healing Spring inside the Temple. Another thing that’s right is Smokey hasn’t killed any candidates BUT remember the season 1 finale Exodus Pt 2, where Locke gets drug into the hole by Smokey but doesnt kill him, I found that very strange. Maybe it was a warning

I’ve always wondered (since we are talking in circles here) about how did the DI KNOW how to keep Smokey out with a sonic wave fence? How did they know his “weaknesses” ? That’s another subject at another time but I’m still very curious as to how they knew how to keep him out, unless there were some ancient scrolls of sorts left behind by other inhabitants of the island yrs ago & they found them & followed *directions* as it were. I don’t know, just speculating!

I like the theory….

Smokie has never even TRIED to kill any of the candidates (it would seem). It sees Locke, then later tries taking him. It chases after Kate and Juliet but only appears to want to take flashes of them.

We can assume that if smokie wanted these people dead by now, it would’ve happened by now. So why do the temple others, as well as Smokie, all want the candidates alive right now if they’re on separate sides?

Also, Widmore might be after the island’s super-duper magic healing water. He seems to want to exploit the island. If you think about it, if you can control healing water, you might be able to control the world. That’s some pretty serious shit.

Ahh but Ford is a valid canditate while Richard is not. I thought Jacob but why would he tell him he couldnt do something he already has done?

An Richard comes to Sawyer & tells him he wants to kill you so thats why I think that.

could be to richard as well. remember the boy first appears when he is trying to entice richard, and then he changes his tune and lets him leave.

i’m not sure who the boy is referring to yet. we will see…
