End Game

What would happen, if John Locke came out in smokey enough to be redeemed? could he be chosen to be the next Jacob? If so what would the ramifications be?
This is more a question/theory, but I think Locke will be the candidate chose precisely because it was MIB and not Jacob that crossed out his name. He’s the dark-horse.

Both men have to abide by “rules”. If MIB found a loophole that alowed his own murder what better way to stick it back by selecting his murderer as his “replacement” and thus tying him to whatever rules govern the Island and their game. If it all ends “once” this seems a way to bring it all to a head if the essence of what Jacob was and smokey reside in the same “man of faith”.

I think its entirely possible that whidmore knows the rules well enought, he bent them by having a team kill Alex, to understand this. I think he was on Jacobs side but for his own benefit. He knows that if Locke didn’t go back another candidate would have been chosen and the age old battle between Smokey and Jacob would continue.
I also think Smokey has his own list of candidates, but that’s a whole other theory.
