Morality and Magnetic Fields

This is an article I came accross today in Popular Science, and of course, I immediately thought of lost. Probably wasn’t in the writers minds, but interesting nonetheless…

  1. Thanks for sharing Eko. Thats an interesting article. Maybe the “infection” is really just MIB’s way of manipulating the magnetic fields and causing people to lose their sense of morality (example Sayid saying he doesn’t feel pain or something like that from last nights episode).

  2. Reminds me of the novel I’m reading by Stephen King. It’s called “Cell” where some kind of signal comes out of everyone’s cell phones and makes them lose all sense of morality, turning them into mindless animals (Pretty much Zombies).
If Sayid can’t feel pain he’s going to be a tough opponent to beat

  3. I once saw a TV documentary on scientific explanations of perceived supernatural experiences.

A group of scientists visited the house of a family where a child was frightened of sleeping in her own room. She was convinced there were ghosts or something there.

The scientists discovered that there was a clock radio standing quite close to her pillow which radiated an unusually large amount of electromagnetic radiation. Their explanation was that the radiation had stimulated the part of her brain that causes feelings of suspicion (or paranoia).

They also made a test in a lab where the test persons got to wear a helmet that stimulated the same part of the brain. After a while the people started sweating and couldn’t stand being in the room any longer. They couldn’t resist the feeling that someone was after them.

In my recent post I was trying to tie the infection to more of a computer or mechanical device rather than a viral type of infection…
I like this idea. It really ties in well with the island, and if we are right about MIB being infected, it could somehow relate to his inability to go through the pylons…maybe…

Good post either way…I really like this being applied to Lost…

That was very interesting–Thanks ekolocation! I like this much better than the usual way of thinking of infection, because it seemed as if Dogen only used that word for lack of a better one, and I even like it over my own theory of dead bodies inhabited by other lost souls. How do you think the magnetism causes unburied dead bodies to reanimate? Do you think that the magnetism is part of the Hell that the island is corking up or do you think that the magnetic properties hold Hell at bay?

    tanks everyone.

i believe the magnetism has some connection with smokey…im just not sure what yet. there were two pockets of energy on the island according to chang, or faraday. i forgot who. one could be jacob’s and the other smokey’s.

its interesting how magnetism affects brain functions, but without a neurologist on the island they probably wont go this route (who would explain it?)
