Somehow attached, if not chained anyway.
And this attachment rips up trees in passing?

The Smokey in chains concept is quite compelling. Looking at this deeper, let's start with a couple of almost facts.

1. Jacob and MIB are most likley brothers (Jacob and Esau), if not brothers than they know one and other very well.

2. Before the Blackrock arrived, Jacob and MIB were both free to roam the Island and MIB had a human form.

3. Richard was most likely a slave on the Black Rock, but not necessary.

4. Richard knows MIB.

If we assume that Richard came on the Black Rock and that MIB was free prior to that than Richard was most likely partially responsible for MIB being "chained". I say partially because it was probably somehow Jacobs idea.

So the question is, what does it mean for MIB to be in chains. Do we take it literally? Or are these "chains" something more abstract.

Another question, who was in the cabin? Trapped, phasing in and out of time or reality?

If Jacob was in the cabin, then maybe both were somehow "chained" from their physical ability.

If MIB was in the Cabin, perhaps that is what was referred to as being "chained".

Anyway, lots of possibilities, but I think we should be able to tie some of these things together before they tell us outright.

waycurious, it is certainly possible that Smokey can't reach that far, but at least he was able to reach the cockpit in the tree in the first season, and dispose the dead pilot in the top of another tree.

AND he wants to go home (and obviously can't)

Someone speculated that's why he couldn't just go OVER the sonar fence, which made me wonder if the purpose of the Lighthouse was to put the candidate-spying device so high up Smokie couldn't get there ...and now he can walk, the mirror destruction was necessary. (That Jacob. Not big on high-tech. Hmmmm ... wonder if that's a clue. Some new-fangled DEvice got him/them into this sticky wicket.)

Hmm, the smoke monster noise always sounded like weird crickets/bugs to me..and maybe a wooden roller coaster...don't really know about chains though..

I just wanted to point out that UnLocke also said to Richard, "Nice to see you out of those chains, Richard." That was the first thing he ever said to him, and Richard responded immediately with, "You?!?!" This of course tells us that Richard recognized him immediately for what he actually was despite the outwardly appearance of Locke. The only time I can remember actually seeing a physical chain was when Jack, Kate, etc. followed Rousseau onto the Black Rock looking for dynamite, and they found chains inside which they then speculated was for transporting slaves....
I find it interesting that both Jacob and Richard have appeared many times off the island, but MiB is the only one stuck there...
