I think that whoever the kid was, that he was showing his guilt to MIB and he was blaming himself for what was happening... So, "the blood was on his hands." We have also seen Claire wake up with "blood on her hands" after a dream in which Locke tells her, "He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire. Everyone pays the price now." I guess you can see where I am going with this. ;) So, I'll run now before I get pelted with eggs. But when we saw the boy when Locke was with Sawyer, his hands didn't look bloody. I don't believe that Sawyer heard the boy say, "You can't kill him" because he asked Locke, "ya' catch up with the kid?" As for "WHY?" - I've been asking myself that same question.
