Why does it seem that everyone on this site is convinced Jin is dead?

My wife and I think that it is quite plausible that Jin is still alive. For goodness sake the camera shot only showed Jin’s and Sun’s hands drifting apart. Sun was trapped, so she’s a goner. As for Jin, we would have to see at least a camera shot of his face to accurately weigh in on his demise or not. The camera shot of only their hands is kind of creates a condition akin to past theories on Schroedingers box where the cat is both dead and alive before the box is opened. (Sorry for writing this right before tonight’s episode where there may not be enough time for all to weigh in on this before it might be addressed in the show.)

  1. The show contains a very poetic nature, and I believe the two original lovebirds dying together, and being reunited in the FSW fits the bill.

They wanted to die together, Jin stayed, and it was noted between Jack and Jin in quick last second conversation that one couldnt make it to the surface without the canister of air.

Everything points to them being dead…including the sad death music played, and the water filled up the sub.

We saw the hands drift apart, just as we saw Charlie drift away…I think it was more a body floating away due to not being stuck in the sub than it was Jin actually being alive…
Honestly…I really wouldnt want him alive if Sun died…not at this point at least.

  2. By the time we see their hands separate the sub was far down the ocean/sea. Even if he had oxygen with him, trying to swim from that high pressure of the depth to the lower pressure to the surface would caused him Decompression sickness (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompression_sickness). He would suffer horrible pains and eventually die. So I believe the scenario that he could be both dead and alive is false, because whatever the case might be the result will end up to be the same. Him inevitably dying. Unless of course if Jin has taken scuba diving lessons and knows how to deal with this situations, or if they have the right medical equipment to treat him. But if you think about it, is this really what the producers intended to show us?

  3. Thanks for your quick and comprehensive response AES. I respectfully counter that it’s possible that Jack was wrong about the canister and a curveball about Jin’s supposed death wouldn’t be very unLostlike. Hey, even the Fonz was proven wrong, right…lol. All the best to ya.

  4. Well Chachi…its actually a good thought…

I would be a liar if I didnt admit that I thought something along the same lines…

My idea was based that Jin is a candidate (and Sun is NOT), and wont die…but that would mean that Sayid is alive too…(“THERE IS NO SAYID!!!)…and I dont buy that…

I cant say anything is 100% right or wrong anymore, lol, who the hell knows…but I think it would cheat them of their last moments if they were separated…

I get your point fully though…especially about the “box” (EXCELLENT observation)…it really made me think twice…cant lie…

  5. Actually…thinking more… your “box” comment makes this probably the most logical theory that I completely disagree with…

As bad as that sounds…its quite a good thing…

  6. I never once considered him being alive still. Not only would his fingers be moving after he drifted away from Sun under water……but man he would look like an uber scumbag after saying he wouldnt leave Sun again. I just cant see ANY way for him to be alive without the writers looking like complete jokes.

  7. They are dead. Besides agreeing with the camera and health facts listed above, read the latest EW. It talks about the writers use of killing them as a way to show you leading into the finale that 1) no one is safe 2) You most likely will be suprised.

  8. that would be awesome if they showed jin trying to swim to the surface then he gets the bends and he bloats up and washes up on shore and jack finds him and goes “damn, he died of decompression sickness aka the bends” classic
