Thinking Outside of the Magic Box

I have read a few theories recently where people keep speculating on who will be the one to replace Jacob or will there be several. Will it be one of the candidates or several or someone else. My thoery on the end of Lost is not new (I have written this before within discussions in other people<s posts) and perhaps not original (I may not be the first to have said it here).

I just want to repeat it one more time before the finale on sunday.

There will be no replacement for Jacob. there will be no new Smoke Monster. There will be a reversal of expectations.

If Jack’s only destiniy is to follow Jacob and offer continuity of a situation that has existed for 2000 years, what was the point? Joseph Campbell describes (in “The Hero With A Thousand Faces”) that the hero is the one who comes in and breaks the Status Quo, bringing profound change, for better or worse.

The Status Quo on the island is the balance of power between Smoke Monster and Jacob. There may be more to their motivations, and their game has obviously taken on more complex patterns and ripples, but their basic struggle as protagonist (he who hatches a plan or tries to move forward towards an objective) and antagonist (he who sets up hurdles and tries to block the plans) has stayed the same.

My thought is that Jack and the others will break the existing stalemate and do something or make decisions leading to something unforseen by both the antagonist AND protagonist.

I think we have been seeing this all season and perhaps last season as well. We have heard the term “destiny” bantered around since season one. Funily enough, Locke has been using the key phrases “It’s our destiny” and we “were brought here for a reason”. He is also the person who keeps saying “Don’t tell me what I can’t do”.

Perhaps that lesson has also started to sink in for Jack.
