I honestly dont know at this point what he really has to redeem...Jacob if anyone may need to do the redeeming...

MIB at least TRIED to learn both sides...tried to give himself a choice about what to do...but in the end, after mum killed everyone and collapsed the well...he broke too...and realizing that even he, himself, could be swayed by the dark side...realizes that all the things his mother said about people were true.

I get that he killed people...

And my two theories are either the FSW is not real, meaning yes, he is a bad guy, and most certainly has some redeeming...

or what seems to be the direction now...

That the FSW IS real, and dying on the island is possibly a way for the characters to be reincarnated off island...but its HOW they die...will they sacrifice, or will they fight, destroy, and corrupt...

Cooper F,D,and C...he was a terrible person in the old timeline we know, and spit in Locke and Sawyers face when brought to the island, possibly gaining his last chance at redemption...

If the FSW is real, and people can be connected to it...could that be what Mommy thanked him for upon him killing her?

Regardless, if it is real, and they do connect through death somehow...(I went down a tunnel and saw a bright light)...then maybe thats all he is trying to do...help the Losties do what he has tried so hard to do...go home.

The show defining what is real, has never been so important than after this episode.

Dabsi...great points there.

On reincarnation...I look at Anthony Cooper as the perfect example...

Anyone else NOT feel sorry for the guy?

In a previous life, he was a terrible...terrible person...

Then he is brought to the island, where he has the chance to apologize to Locke, he spits in his face...
Then Locke delivers Cooper to Sawyer...and again, Cooper has the chance to read the letter...to see what he did wrong, and at the very least, admit his mistake and apologize...and he spit in Sawyers face as well.

He is reincarnated into a man who has everything taken away from him, by the man who he took everything away from in another life.

John never had a chance...he never should have made it as far as he did. It was his will...his fight to survive that got him as far as he had come...redemption awaits John Locke...I feel it in my bones.

How anyone...ANYONE can view ones faith in his or herself as pathetic, weak, or gullible is beyond me.

That may be the one mistake that MIB made...

Hi Achalli, I think you have the right train of thought. I have been reading some interesting information that ties in much of what we have seen on Lost and provides an understanding of what 'the island' is, and what the purpose of 'the losties' are and why they are there, and why the D.I. was also on 'the island', etc.

In Jainism, purgatory is called Naraka. A soul is born into a Naraka as a direct result of his or her previous karma (actions of body, speech and mind), and resides there for a finite length of time until his/her karma has achieved its completion.

I believe that 'the Island' is a type of 'Naraka' where people go to correct their bad karma and await reincarnation.

In Buddhism, the 'consciousness' arising in the new person is neither identical to, nor different from the old 'consciousness', but forms part of a causal continuum or stream with it.

Very nice theory!

Andre7, AES, Deadgolf, LostDestiny, I'm glad you liked this. An interesting point to note is that from a pruley historical and archeological point of view there are scientists that think that Judaism evolved from Egyptian religion.

Inquisitor, I agree that the writers used many influences to create the universe of Lost. I am also resigned to the fact that all my questions will not be answered. But that doesn't mean we should stop theorizing. For me the fun is in having the idea, looking into it to see if it is even slightly plausible, and presenting it to others to see what they think. I don't think we should stop speculating just because we are near the end.

Good research and interesting idea, (here comes the "but"), BUT.. I think we should stop expecting some sort of "answer" to explain the Island and its properties. I think the writers created the Island, perhaps with some influences in literature and history, but made it its own thing. In other words, there is no "oh good job you've found the answer" out there because it's an original concept all its own.

I'm glad the Egyptian connection has surfaced. I've wondered about the symbols we've seen in the temple and also these symbols appeared on the hatch computer when the numbers were not typed in. I keep thinking also we will be told more about the Giant statue that was destroyed by the Black Rock and why Jacob has total control has to who can enter.
