I’ll say it again just incase, Do not read this if you have not seen the Lost finale and/or the epilogue included on the Lost Season 6 DVD

Anyway, if you have seen the epilogue, does anyone know what Hurley meant by the “job” for Walt? In a way I think the whole epilogue kind of left viewers guessing than answering some questions, but my guess was for Walt to take over as the ‘Man in charge’, and Walt was the ‘New’ leader.

The Dharma Initiative was explained as to why the islander’s were still getting food drops, but other than that I can’t think of anything that was answered.

Hey did anyone ever suggest that Jack would be the new smoke monster? Cus it makes sense in a lot of ways.

– MIB was more trustworthy of science as Jack was, where the new leader of the island Hurley is probably more of a faith guy, like Jacob.

– he woke up in the same place, or at least in the same body position, as MIB after entering the light cave thingy.

– in purgatory Kate said she waited for Jack so long, like at the time I took it as she just had to wait her whole life until she died, but maybe she had to wait til however long Jack’s spirit as the smoke monster got off the island as well. It explains why removing the cork made MIB mortal, so he was able to die and pass on. The same has to happen for Jack to pass on perhaps?

– it be pretty cool.

Thinking about this even more, perhaps anybody who enters the light who is not “permitted” like say Desmond was, turns into the smoke monster. But I dont think turning into the smoke monster necessarily means that person is going to be evil or have a grudge against the protector of the island. That gives more reason to why the writers would characterize MIB so much, he had a single, human motivation. Perhaps it wasn’t his destiny or assignment to be against Jacob, he just chose to be.

So maybe while Hurley and Ben were running things, they talked to a very nice and accommodating Smokie Jack and they just had to find Desmond again so they could let Jack pass on. But knowing Jack, perhaps he pushed that off for awhile, and lent Hurley and Ben a hand on the island. I mean, we know smokie can move a lot of shit, plus Jack would be a good leader while Hurley and Ben were off island.

The writers said the show was about the characters, and it was, and all the shit that the Losties went through were result of Jacob’s and MIB’s character. MIB was pissed (who wouldn’t be, his life wasn’t that great, psycho mom and all) so a lot of shit happened. And perhaps Jacob could have easily went over seas and just gave a few people a job application to take over the island, but he and his brother liked to play games, so they did.  they both got a God complex or something. And you know what? Thank goodness cus there wouldn’t have been much of a show if the two of them just hugged it out and got along.

Oh and another thing…

…like the mysterious Mom of Jacob and MIB, she was probably both the protector and the smoke monster. Like why not be both? But then if the same procedure had to happen with the cork being removed to make smokie mortal, how she was killed so easily? My answer, it’s fricken LOST and there was probably a loophole or exception that really doesn’t have much logic behind it, but you just have to go with it.

Like maybe because she was both smokie and the light protector allowed her death to be easier, or honestly the fact she didn’t get first word in, or maybe just because the rules don’t apply to her as much. It’s LOST, if the show ever had a straight set of definitive rules the show would have been called FOUND.

I haven’t posted here for a while, as sadly this season of Lost hasn’t inspired much thought for me.
i feel bad for saying this, as it goes against all the praise i’ve heaped upon the creators and cast of this show over the past few years, but this season (and to a lesser extent the last one) has been pretty mediocre television.

I’d like to think i’m not the only one, and hopefully this thread will be a place where anyone who does feel a little let down can express their opinion. I’ve always thought Lost was this brilliant show that had all these brilliant ingredients that made it so much better than anything else out there, but now when i watch it its actually pretty…well…dull.

The first say three seasons i’ve watched so many times, and every element of them was brilliant, the script, acting, music, little easter eggs here and there. I felt everytime i rewatched an episode, there was something i’d previously missed. This season and the last i haven’t even bothered watching repeats as its just not that involving anymore. Somethings missing.
Now, i’m not one of these people that just watches it to get answers (although its getting that way as there isn’t much else left), but the way they are going about answering the mysteries mostly through dialogue has seemed pretty lazy, alot of the time contrived and at worst laughable. ‘Oh yeah, by the way, the whispers are ghosts’ ‘Yeah Jack, i pretended to be your dead dad’. I loved all the characters, and the flashbacks were some of the fantastic elements of the show, getting to know all their back stories, i felt like i knew them all so well. This to me was one of the most important parts of the show, and the show was never the same once they ended. Now i don’t really get what their motivations are.

The emotion is missing, i remember watching past seasons, it never failed to strike up the feelings they were trying to get from the viewer, i’ll admit it, even shedding a tear now and then. Now whenever the sad violin music comes on and theres a little ’emotional’ scene, it just comes across as forced and cheesy. It often seems like the actors feel the same way, as they do their best to make some of the poorly written dialogue believable. I’ve waited for each episode this season with baited breath, expecting that lost magic to happen after the last ones shocking cliffhanger, only to sit through yet another uneventful hour until the last couple of minutes.

It feels to me that only true fans of Lost would watch this season, as i can’t see any reason why anyone else would. All the elements that previously made the show great, the characters, the drama, the mysteries, have been replaced by some pretty substandard television. I do feel that although some don’t like to admit it, alot of you feel the same. I am just hoping that this past three seasons of setup (since ‘the beginning of the end’) is leading up to the epic conclusion that the creators have made it out to be, but i will settle for a reasonably satisfying ending.

Hurley has become corrupted, Hurley use to never like to lie, no matter what, but what did he do? He says Jacob told him to talk to Locke. Did anyonse else notice that Hurley didn’t have mirror scence in ALT? Also, his line about, ‘Dead people are more reliable than live ones,” hit me dead in the throat because ever since LAX, when Charile yells that he is suppose to die, that the ones who died on the island were going to be the ones in the know in FSW, and come to find out, that feeling was right. Also, Jack’s further transformation, he knew Hurley lied but still went along with the flow.
Everybody keeps talking about how the plane wouldn’t fly anyway, so why are they trying to blow it up? I guess we are dealing with a rag tag team of pryomaniacs. Also note how, the Losties split up (never a good sign) into Candidates v. Non-Candidates (Frank has the potential to be a candidate, anything goes now, but personally I think that Frank has something important left to do and might just be flying off the island, he does know the bearing after all and Jack can be his co-pilot, jk (maybe)

Here’s Your Easter Eggs

Hurley made a huge donation to the museum where Pierre Chang and Charlotte work, to the paleontology wing, because I guess he knows that all birds (including chicken) evolved from the dinosaurs.
The Human Fund
Hugo mentions to his mom that he must attend an event for the Human Fund. This is a fictional charity created by George Costanza on Seinfeld
The Waiter
The waiter at the restaurant where Hugo and Libby met in the altverse was played by Jesse Smith, who played one of the random background extras who survived the plane crash in the first few seasons.
Spanish Johnny’s
The restaurant Hugo goes to is called Spanish Johnny’s, most likely a reference to a character in the Bruce Springsteen song “Incident on 57th Street.” Even better that he is meeting Rosalina (who stands him up), who is the main character on the very next track, Rosalita.
Outback Roasters
At Mr. Cluck’s there’s a sign for new Outback Roasters, suggesting that this new Australian-themed item was the reason for Hugo’s Sydney trip. The tagline, “It’s like a walkabout in your mouth,” also refers to the walkabout trip John Locke tried to take.

Number 42
At Mr. Cluck’s, Desmond is order number 42,one of the Numbers.
The Island in the Office
In Dr. Brooks’ office, there’s a picture of an Island, much like the Island Hurley was on in the original timeline.
In the room of patients at Santa Rosa, there is also an island drawn on the blackboard, complete with a shark in the water like the DHARMA shark from the original Island.
Connect Four
A patient plays Connect Four at Santa Rosa, a game Hurley played in the original timeline with both Leonard Simms and Dave
The Picnic Date
Before Libby died, she and Hurley planned their first real date as a picnic on the beach. In the altverse, this was their first date (as Libby said, it’s like the date they never had)
Desmond’s Son
Desmond tells Ben that his son is named Charlie (without missing a beat) in the altverse. In the original timeline, this was Desmond’s son’s name, a possible hint that Desmond in the altverse has all his memories from the original timeline
License Plates
The license plates on Desmond’s car in the altverse change between the time he drives away from Hugo and Libby on the beach (4PCI264) and the time he runs over Locke (2FAN321), either a continuity error or a sign that he changed the plates to avoid being identified as the man who drove into Locke.
Dr. Brooks
In case you forgot, Dr. Brooks was also in charge of Santa Rosa when Hurley was there in the original timeline in the episode “Dave.”
The Exploding Human
Ilana explodes while handling dynamite from the Black Rock the same way Leslie Arzt did at the end of season 1 (but I personally think this was the writers shout out to heroes (how to stop an exploding man from their season 1 finale). In the words of Ben, no sooner than she tell you who you guys are, candidates and what she was here to do, she dies. The Island (thank goodness) was done with her (such a waste of space character, why did she get bumped up to a main character?). What does the island have in store for the rest of the Losties (shudder to think about it).
Notes from Underground
After Ilana explodes, Hurley finds a copy of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Notes from Underground, a novel whose themes echo the series, as it is about free will and about the fact that determinism or fate is not valid because people can sometimes to things without reason or purpose just to prove that they have free will, as when Hurley later goes to see Flocke just to prove he can. (for even more info please see book report toward the end)
The Black Bag
There are three option as to what the contents are:
1. The stolen diamonds Miles found via Nikki and Paulo (not likely Miles would have been more careful)
2. The black and white stones (I am pretty sure jack still has those)
3. Jacob’s ashes (most likely since it was Illana that blew up)
The Boy in the Jungle
The boy in the jungle was not (in my opinion) the same boy the same one who haunted Flocke in “The Substitute.” Now I read theory that some people thought that this was the same boy, just that he had aged and this boy is a reminder to Flocke that he needs to leave soon before the boy morphs into a full grown MIB, but that is lame. Does his smile to Desmond suggests he either knows Desmond or the two are on the same side? Desmond can see the boy, much like Sawyer could see the other boy, so what the hell does that mean?
What is the Island?
Richard asks Hurley to prove he’s talking to Jacob by revealing what he compared the Island to. Richard is referring to the scene in “Ab Aeterno” when Jacob described the Island as a cork keeping evil (or the wine) in the bottle.
The Whispers
Hurley finally reveals a longstanding question about the Whispers, describing them as noises from dead people who’ve done bad things and are unable to move on, suggesting that the Island may actually be a type of limbo.
The Well
Flocke throws Desmond into a well. This well is similar to the one outside of the Orchid Station that John Locke descended into to find the frozen donkey wheel that moved the Island.

I think this might be an important clue because I remember that Locke gave Ben (back in the good ole Henry Gale days) a book, The Brothers Karamazov also by the same author.

The Book:
Notes from the Underground (a short novel) by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Background:
It is considered by many to be the world’s first existentialist novel. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man’s diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done?. The second part of the book is called “Apropos of the Wet Snow,” and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying, and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, omniscient narrator.

Plot Summary:
Part 1
It consists of an introduction, three main sections and a conclusion. (i) The short introduction propounds a number of riddles whose meanings will be further developed. (1) Chapters two, three and four deal with suffering and the enjoyment of suffering; (2) chapters five and six with intellectual and moral vacillation and with conscious “inertia”-inaction; (3) chapters seven through nine with theories of reason and logic; (c) the last two chapters are a summary and a transition into Part 2.
War is described as people’s rebellion against the assumption that everything needs to happen for a purpose, because humans do things without purpose, and this is what determines human history.
Secondly, the narrator’s desire for pain and paranoia is exemplified by his liver pain and toothache. This parallels Raskolnikov’s behavior in Dostoevsky’s later novel, Crime and Punishment. He says that, due to the cruelty of society, human beings only moan about pain in order to spread their suffering to others. He builds up his own paranoia to the point he is incapable of looking his co-workers in the eye.
The main issue for the Underground Man is that he has reached a point of ennui[2] and inactivity[3]. Unlike most people, who typically act out of revenge because they believe justice is the end, the Underground Man is conscious of his problems, feels the desire for revenge, but he does not find it virtuous; this incongruity leads to spite and spite towards the act itself with its concomitant circumstances. He feels that others like him exist, yet he continuously concentrates on his spitefulness instead of on actions that would avoid the problems he is so concerned with. He even admits at one point that he’d rather be inactive out of laziness.
The first part also gives a harsh criticism of determinism and intellectual attempts at dictating human action and behavior by logic, which the Underground Man mentions in terms of a simple math problem two times two makes four (see also necessitarianism). He states that despite humanity’s attempt to create the “Crystal Palace,” a reference to a famous symbol of utopianism in Nikolai Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done?, one cannot avoid the simple fact that anyone at any time can decide to act in a way which might not be considered good, and some will do so simply to validate their existence and to protest and confirm that they exist as individuals. For good as a general term is subjective and in the case of the Underground Man the good here he’s ridiculing is enlightened self interest (egoism, selfishness). It is this position being depicted as logical and valid that the novels protagonist despises. Since his romantic embracing of this ideal, he seems to blame for his current base unhappiness. This type of rebellion is critical to later works of Dostoevsky. As this type of rebellion is used by adolescents to validate their own existence, uniqueness and independence (see Dostoevsky’s The Adolescent). Rebellion in the face of the dysfunction, disorder of adult experience, that one inherits under the understanding of tradition and society.
In other works, Dostoevsky again confronts the concept of free will and constructs a negative argument to validate free will against determinism in the character Kirillov’s suicide in his novel The Demons. Notes from Underground marks the starting point of Dostoevsky’s move from psychological and sociological themed novels to novels based on existential and general human experience in crisis.

Part 2
The second part is the actual story proper and consists of three main segments that lead to a furthering of the Underground Man’s super-consciousness.
The first is his obsession with an officer who physically moves him out of the way without a word or warning. He sees the officer on the street and thinks of ways to take revenge, eventually deciding to bump into him, which he does, finding to his surprise that the officer does not seem to even notice it happened.
The second segment is a dinner party with some old school friends to wish Zverkov, one of their number, goodbye as he is being transferred out of the city. The underground man hated them when he was younger, but after a random visit to Simonov’s, he decides to meet them at the appointed location. They fail to tell him that the time has been changed to six instead of five, so he arrives early. He gets into an argument with the four after a short time, declaring to all his hatred of society and using them as the symbol of it. At the end, they go off without him to a secret brothel, and, in his rage, the underground man follows them there to confront Zverkov once and for all, regardless if he is beaten or not. He arrives to find Zverkov and company have left, but, it is there that he meets Liza, a young prostitute.
The story cuts to Liza and the underground man lying silently in the dark together. The underground man confronts Liza with an image of her future, by which she is unmoved at first, but, she eventually realizes the plight of her position and how she will slowly become useless and will descend more and more, until she is no longer wanted by anyone. The thought of dying such a terribly disgraceful death brings her to realize her position, and she then finds herself enthralled by the underground man’s seemingly poignant grasp of society’s ills. He gives her his address and leaves. After this, he is overcome by the fear of her actually arriving at his dilapidated apartment after appearing such a “hero” to her and, in the middle of an argument with his servant, she arrives. He then curses her and takes back everything he said to her, saying he was, in fact, laughing at her and reiterates the truth of her miserable position. Near the end of his painful rage he wells up in tears after saying that he was only seeking to have power over her and a desire to humiliate her. He begins to criticize himself and states that he is in fact horrified by his own poverty and embarrassed by his situation. Liza realizes how pitiful he is and tenderly embraces him. The underground man cries out “They – they won’t let me – I – I can’t be good!” After all this, he still acts terribly towards her, and, before she leaves, he stuffs a five ruble note into her hand, which she throws onto the table. He tries to catch her as she goes out onto the street but cannot find her and never hears from her again. He tries to stop the pain in his heart by “fantasizing”, “And isn’t it better, won’t it be better?…Insult – after all, it’s a purification; it’s the most caustic, painful consciousness! Only tomorrow I would have defiled her soul and wearied her heart. But now the insult will never ever die within her, and however repulsive the filth that awaits her, the insult will elevate her, it will cleanse her…” He recalls this moment as making him unhappy whenever he thinks of it, yet again proving the fact from the first section that his spite for society and his inability to act like it, makes him unable to act better than it.

My WTF moment of the show was when Desmond ran over Locke. Now, ever since LAX when Charlie said he was suppose to die, I had an inkling that the ones in the know about what is going on are ones who have died on the island in the original timeline. Now I remember hearing a podcast when Darlton said we should be wondering what would happen if someone died in the FSW and was also dead in the original timeline, I guess we are about to find out. Now, I have a few theories about why Desmond did what he did:

1. If ‘true love” is the trigger, Locke would never be able to remember because he is in love with Helen and Helen was never on the island, so Locke would need a near death experience to trigger his memories.
2. The Island is Locke’s true love.
3. He is trying to trigger Jack’s memory, which I think is the answer because of how the show ended last night with the stare down between Jack and Flocke.

This special dagger that supposedly can kill the smoke monster and Jacob has a specific set of instructions that come with it. Something along the lines of “you have to kill him before he speaks to you.” Now, if you rewatch the scene where Sayid stabs MIB, he technically didn’t follow directions as the MIB says “Hello Sayid” before he stabs him. The second time we see the dagger, MIB gives it to Richard to kill Jacob, with the exact same directions. Once again the person with the dagger doesn’t follow the directions. Now, if we believe these instructions (that have been repeated twice), then it got me thinking, whoever has not spoken to MIB yet, can still kill him. So who hasn’t spoken to him? So far I have only come up with these people.

Jack, Hurley, Desmond, Ilana, and Frank (If you come up with anymore please let me know)

If the directions are correct, than I believe one of those people will end up killing MIB. One problem with my theory though is I’m not sure if speaking to the MIB counts if he is in someone else form, for example Christian Shephard. A question I had that I’m hoping someone could answer is when Ben killed Jacob, was the weapon he used the same dagger?

To go a little farther on my theory, there’s something I’d like to point out. We all know Frank was supposed to pilot 815 but he overslept that day. Now think back to season 1. Who is the first person who died on the island? (I’m not talking about the guy who got sucked into the planes engine, or the cop who came with Kate) The person I’m talking about is the pilot. That was supposed to be Frank who died, but instead, he wound up on the island alive. There would be no reason to keep a character like him around unless there’s something more to it. This leads me to believe that Frank has a greater purpose, something important to do…like kill the MIB with the dagger.

Now I know there is no way the writers would ever make it so Frank ends up killing the MIB, but I was just hoping to put some stuff out there, on some things I feel havn’t been discussed enough yet and see what comes back. This is my first post on this site just for the record, hope you enjoy.

I don’t have time to check myslef but i noticed that the dead people Hurley meets always seem to have died in the opposite place to where he is,as in when he’s off the island Anna Lucia,Eko and charlie visit him(all died on the island) and Richard’s wife and his crazy friend Dave(I’m assuming he has died since he fled the mental hospital) both died in the real world but visited Hurley on the island?

Just looking for some feedback if anybody has any

Now, I only speak English, so I could have missed something, but at no point in the subtitles did I read anything that Isabella said regarding MIB being stopped. In fact, we didn’t even see her talking to Hurley without a translation at any point in the exchange…did we? And Hurley says something like, “You got it.” to someone after we notice Isabella disappear…so, could it be that Jacob showed up and told Hurley to tell Richard that Isabella gave the instruction? Maybe Jacob was able to bring Isabella to Richard?

I don’t know for sure, but if Jacob is now manipulating Richard with his dead wife, then it turns Jacob into a slightly different character, doesn’t it?

Or…did I miss something? Did she really say that?

It is pretty well universally believed that MIB has taken the form of people whose bodies are on the Island (Christian, Alex, and Yemi). However, in Ab Aeterno, we are lead to believe that MIB also took the form of Richard’s wife, who was not on the Island (which I am confused about, why take the form of only Richard’s wife? Why not the doctor? Or why not Nadia to Sayid, etc.?). I have also read that MIB was the spider that lead to Nicki and Paolo’s death and perhaps the image of Walt that lead to Shannon’s death. It would not surprise me to learn that MIB also played Dave, the hallucination that haunted Hurley and almost convinced him to kill himself (which also plays into the theory that MIB cannot directly kill candidates and is trying to influence their deaths).

As for other manifestations that have yet to be partially or fully explained (that I recall), are the horse witnessed by Kate and Sawyer; Ben’s mother seen by Ben; the little boy with the bloody hands witnessed by Flocke and Sawyer; Walt’s appearance to Locke; Walt’s appearance to Shannon at the beach; the whispers; Libby’s appearance to Michael (off island); Ana Lucia’s appearance to Hurley (off island); and Christian (as it appears that he may just be Christian, may be MIB, may be someone else, or some or all of those). It also is clear that these manifestations are only able to witnessed by some (e.g. the little boy was viewed by Flocke and Sawyer, but not Richard). These are also to be contrasted with the dreams the Claire, Locke and Eko had.

I think it is particularly important that Flocke AND Sawyer could see the little boy. I also think it is important that Kate AND Sawyer were able to see Kate’s horse, but I am not sure what to make of the fact that Sawyer can share in these viewings. It should be mentioned that Sayid also saw Walt just prior to Shannon being shot.

It seems clear to me then that there are at least two forces behind these manifestations, one being MIB and one being someone or something else, and possibly more. I say this because if MIB is directing some, but Flocke saw the little boy, then someone or something is subjecting him to the same thing.

Obviously, there is some relevance to these manifestations to those that see them (again, except, as we currently know, Sawyer) as they represent some turning point or parallel moment in life off the Island (so, perhaps are supposed to learn a lesson on the Island?) — perhaps Jacob, perhaps someone or something else, or are being used to manipulate the particular individual (Yemi for Eko, Alex for Ben, Christian for Jack and possibly Claire, Dave for Hurley, etc.) — certainly MIB. I think these manifestations (or whatever you want to call them) will make Hurley and perhaps Miles more important as the season and series wind down.

At first, I couldn’t imagine the other source being Jacob, as I would think MIB would be aware of that possibility and why would Jacob try to influence MIB in that manner, knowing that MIB would suspect it. However, I can’t think of another reason for it being anyone else, based on what we currently directly know (in other words, I am sure we can theorize how Frogurt may be behind it, probably due to some manipulation of the chemical properties in his frogurt, but we have not seen anything that supports that conjecture).

The only other theory I can think of points to it being tied in with the whispers, which have not even been partially explained yet (other than to run the other way when heard). Although, I do have a wide array of theories on the origin and purpose of the whispers, but that will be saved for another post.

Please let me know what you think, how these manifestations tie in overall and any other comments on anything above.

So far from what we’ve seen in the flash sideways, everything seems to be going quite well for everyone (apart from Kate). Some have speculated that the flash sideways could actually be the ENDING of the show, after this war is over and the losties get to turn back time and change what happened and live happily ever after.
But i think the writers are lulling us into a false sense of security.
I think the writers are using a very clever plot device, which will confirm just how high the stakes really are.
The losties have constantly been told how important it is that they are on the island, and how important the island is itself.
The losties planned to use that bomb to change the past so they never came to the island, and i think this flash sideways is showing us a world where they didn’t, but its not as sweet as it seems.

I think in this flash sideways we’re going to see what would/would’ve happened if the islands magical magicness didn’t exist (whether its because of the bomb, or i suspect something else) and the losties never came to the island, and i think its going to end in catastrophe. Whatever the island is, i believe it is extremely important in ways we have yet to find out, and i suspect in a world where its power ceases to exist, and the events we have seen didn’t play out, something very very bad is going to happen. The very thing they are all there to prevent in the first place.

So, i think the sideways flash is a sort of ‘what if’ scenario for the viewers to see just how crucial the events of the past 5 seasons really are. We’ll get to see this all play out. Its a clever way to show us this disastrous event, without it actually happening to our losties.

This isn’t a theory, just my feelings on where the sideways flashes are heading.

Forgive me if I’ve missed a relevant post, but I haven’t really read anyone’s thoughts on why, why, why would Hurley be in Australia in the alternate timeline? He said himself that he’s “the luckiest man alive”(or something like that), so apparently he’s not plagued by the numbers. We can then assume that he’s not hunting down their mysterious origin, so why make the trip? Not everyone got on the flight this time around, so it’s not that everyone had to be there. I’m very interested to see why exactly Hurley made the trip. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey folks,

I’m not sure if anyone has posted or analyzed the Season 6 poster yet, and if you have, sorry for being tardy to the party.

If you take a look at the order of the cast members, you’ll find that all of the characters who have been killed are standing more towards the back. This of course assumes that Juliet actually died in the bomb, and possibly that Claire is a walking undead, a la Locke and Nemesis. Taking from this, there are only six cast members that are definitely standing in front of everyone else:

  • Miles
  • Kate
  • Jin
  • Hurley
  • “Locke”
  • Richard

Not sure what this means, but it could indicate who won’t be part of the massive body count expected by the end of the series. Just a thought…

What do you think: are they just a mysterious force that binds the Universe together and will never be explained at all? Or will they end up having some kind of explanation, be it a natural one or supernatural one?

Personally, I’m fine with never getting an explanation. But I also liked The Force in Star Wars better before mitichlorians (something Damon Lindelof once alluded to).

If we get an explanation, my money’s on this long shot: they’re just random lottery numbers that got caught up in a time loop. Everyone got obsessed with their supposed good or bad luck, and self-fulfilled their own prophecies (“made their own luck”).

Theory: Yes, I think that Kate is pregnant.

Why?

It all goes along with the what Eloise said to the Oceanic Six before the return to island. Let me explain.

ELOISE: Come on in.

JACK: Ben and Sun-

ELOISE: Heard what they needed to hear, and this does not concern them. [She looks through a large amount of papers on the desk.] Oh. Here we are. [She brings a battered envelope to Jack. We see it has “Jack Shephard” written on the front.]

JACK: What’s this?

ELOISE: It’s John Locke’s suicide note.

[Thunder continues rumbling]

JACK: [Sighs] Uh… I, uh… I didn’t know.

ELOISE: Well, why would you? Obituaries don’t see fit to mention when people hang themselves, Jack.

JACK: [Sighs] Why would he kill himself?

ELOISE: Ohh… there are many reasons, I’m sure, but the only one that matters is this–he is going to help you get back. John is going to be a proxy. A substitute.

JACK: A substitute for who?

ELOISE: Jack… who do you think? You need to, as best you can, recreate the conditions of the original flight… which is why you need to give John something of your father’s. You have to get something that belonged to your father, and you need to give it to John.

JACK: What?

ELOISE: That’s what you have to do.

JACK: My father… is gone. My father has been dead for three years. You want me to… [scoffs] a–and to give it to Locke?! He’s in a coffin! This is ridiculous.

ELOISE: Oh, stop thinking how ridiculous it is and start asking yourself whether or not you believe it’s going to work. That’s why it’s called a leap of faith, Jack.

Eloise explains, rather vaguely, that they have to “recreate” the first plane crash as best the can in order for the second crash to find the island. That’s why Locke had to die and why Jack had to give him something of his father’s. Now the way I believe it had to work was not that they had have all the same situations on the second plane that they did on the first, that would be impossible, but moreso that everyone from Oceanic 815 that was going to be on flight 316 had to fit the role of someone from Oceanic 815 whether it was by being themself again or by fitting the situation of someone else (the other passengers excluded from this as the island doesn’t know them yet so it doesn’t matter–they’re created their own original situation)–that seems straightforward and it’s easy to pick out as they’re boarding the plane.

[As Jack walks through the plane he sees Sayid. Sayid looks up and looks like he wants to say something, but then he looks at the woman next to him and frowns, avoiding Jack’s eyes. Jack sees Sun, next. She has Jin’s ring in her hands. Jack sees Kate. She’s keeping her head low and looking away.]

JACK: You made it.

KATE: [taking off her sunglasses] Yeah, I made it.

[Jack continues walking to his seat and sits down.]

[Hurley enters, carrying a guitar case in front of him.]

FLIGHT ATTENDANT: That should be everybody.

So the Oceanic Six (plus Locke and minus Aaron) are all here. Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun, Hurely and Locke. The fact that Ben and Frank are there too is irrelevant (at least for now) because they weren’t on Ocean Six so they have nothing to recreate just as none of the other passengers do either. It’s these Six who have to recreate the role of a previous 815 character in order for the island to accept them back–that’s what Eloise says, we don’t know why, that’s just the way it is.

Hurley is taking on the role of Charlie here. I’m not entirely sure but I think the guitar might actually be Charlie’s–either way though, it clearly shows that he’s brought a guitar just like Charlie did that first flight. Hurley’s on board and the island will recognize him for filling Charlie’s spot, or at least having something of Charlie’s.

Sayid is taking on Kate’s old role as the fugitive in handcuffs with a “special friend” beside him to watch over him–we also know that Alana, Sayid’s special friend, knew where guns were (we see her and those other dude’s with a buttload of guns during episode 11) and it’s likely that they were hers because she knew Sayid was dangerous–just as the Marshal, Mars, from season one had a buttload of guns because he knew, or believed that Kate was dangerous. So Sayid is on board and the island will recognize him for filling Kate’s original role.

Sun and Jack are two that can go either of two ways and I’m not entirely sure that it matters but I’ll explain both anyway.

Sun and Jack could either be simply themselves since little has changed with them and they can therefore fill their own previous roles, or Sun could be compared to Rose and Jack to Charlie (I’m not sure if both Hurley and Jack can work as Charlie-fillers, but who knows). Sun is still a married Korean woman and Jack is still a doctor so they can technically still be themselves. But the episode specifically shows Sun fingering Jin’s wedding ring and this can be paralleled to Rose who wore her husband Bernard’s wedding ring around her neck and fingered it similarly before the crash, waiting to see him again when he “gets back from the bathroom”. Jack was also somewhat of a junkie since he became addicted to that drug and this again parallels Charlie–either way, the island will recognize them.

Locke is obviously Christian Shepard, Jack’s (and Claire’s) father as this is the one example we’re actually 100% sure of since Eloise Hawking uses him as a direct example of this weird sort of role filling the gang has to do in order to be accepted back to the island. He’s dead, he’s in a coffin, and he’s wearing Christian’s shoes so he fills that role and the island will take him back as such.

Now when I was thinking all this through while watching them get on the plane (I was going–“oh, look, Hurley’s got a guitar! Sayid’s in handcuffs–o.m.g!” and totally geeking out that the writers are such geniuses, as if that wasn’t already apparent) I found myself wondering how Kate fit in. She can’t fit the role of herself because she’s no longer a fugitive, she’s a free woman and not in handcuffs, no wanted, no marshal with a pack of guns watching her. She can’t be Sun because she’s not a married Korean woman. She can’t be Ana Lucia because she’s not a cop, can’t be Libby because she’s not insane nor a psychiatrist, she can’t be Rose because she’s not a married black woman waiting for her husband and fingering his wedding ring, she has no obvious role to fill–so then I thought of Claire. HOLY CRAP SHE’S A YOUNG, UNMARRIED PREGNANT WOMAN–AH!

It works other ways too because if you think about it, Claire was pregnant with Christian Shepard’s grandson, since he was her father, the baby–Aaron–had Christian’s third-generation blood in it, right? And Jack is also the child of Christian Shepard and the same blood runs through his veins, so any child of his would also be the grandson of Christian Shepard.

Now, back in Season Three when Juliet was first introduced as the defecting Other, we found out that she was taking samples from all the woman to see if they were pregnant and there was this whole big deal where “Austen” was the next one but we never found if she was or not (knowing that her and Sawyer had been together) and Kate was worried for the rest of the season until discovering that she wasn’t. That whole plot seemed weird and random and it was sort of a reoccurring theme that Kate was worried about being pregnant.

She was the one who helped Sun out when Sun found out she was pregnant and there Sun asked her if she’d ever taken a pregnancy test and of course Kate got that look in her eyes that means “flashback will be arriving soon”.

In the flashback within a later episode we watch her entire story about married life with police officer Kevin, just so she can take a pregnancy test, freak out, and then drug him and leave with the excuse of “I was almost pregnant”. Okayyyy.

Next her and Sawyer and that whole deal happens and while at the Dharma village she talks to Claire and we see her deer-in-headlights reaction to Claire asking her to pick up Aaron so he’ll stop crying. Again–why? Who cares?

Then Claire says “you try it sometime” in reference to having a baby and later Kate seems confused about the whole kid deal. While in bed with Sawyer we find out that she now knows she’s not pregnant and Sawyer is jubilant while she still seems confused and then gets angry with his over-the-top joyful reaction and leaves.

Finally we see Kate deciding to take Aaron as her own and, with the help of Cassidy, it’s revealed to both us and to Kate that she “needed him”–needed this child to look after and love. Okay–but clearly she can’t have Aaron, he’s not hers, he can’t stay with her forever, and no matter what she thinks, she’ll never be his mother. So the thing she needs she can’t get simply by claiming. Hmm.

[Jack walks into his apartment and closes the door. He flicks on the light switch and goes to the kitchen. He pours a drink and we hear the door close. Jack stops pouring and looks around. Jack hears footsteps and a light thud. Jack slowly walks through his apartment and into his bedroom where he finds someone lying on the bed. He moves closer and sees it’s Kate.]

JACK: Kate? What are you doing here?

KATE: Are you still going back to the Island?

JACK: Yeah. Yeah, I think I am.

KATE: Then I’m going with you.

JACK: Kate… what happened? Where’s Aaron? Where–

KATE: [Getting up and facing Jack] No, don’t ask questions. If you want me to go with you… you’ll never ask me that question again. You will never ask me about Aaron. Do you understand, Jack?

JACK: Yes.

KATE: Thank you.

[They kiss, Jack takes off his suit-coat, and they lie on the bed.]

I think it’s easily implied what happens here Kate being who she is and us knowing what she does when she’s “sad”. Coincidentally this takes place the night before they leave to go home and off the island which makes things considerably better if it works out the way I think because at least she won’t die like Juliet believes happened to all the other women who got pregnant on the island. I think that this had to happen just as Sayid had to get arrested, Sun had to end up with Jin’s ring, Jack had to get depressed and strung out on drugs and Hurley had to be visited by Charlie and procure a guitar (perhaps we’ll see a flashback of how Hurley got a guitar–maybe Charlie came back to visit him again, we know that it was Charlie who first began visiting Hurley so it might very well be that he told Hurley to take his guitar or even gave it to him) and Locke had to die. It all had to happen and Kate had to get pregnant. She needed someone’s shoes to fill (no pun intended–hehe Locke) and that was Claire’s.

A final note to this, although I don’t think it really has much to do with anything is that when Kate gave up Aaron in the last episode “Dead is Dead” to his grandmother she also revealed that her reason for going back to the island is to find Claire and somehow, for some reason she believes that Claire is alive. I think we can probably trust this because it seems like everyone has had some sort of weird epiphany without reason about the island and why they have to go back and I can’t see why that would happen if it wasn’t true. Going from “I’m never going back there” to “I’m going back to find Claire, she’s alive” in like a matter of days seems pretty hardcore.

So, while this isn’t some huge, earth-shattering theory about the meaning of the island, I really think that the parallels between the 815/316 flights have meaning to them for the specific characters and it seems to me that the only conclusion that fits into the picture is that Kate is preggo and Jack’s going to be papa. 🙂

Hi. I have been reading through this site for about two months and finally decided to register and post.

I don’t know how you all feel about SPOILER info but I kind of have some. So here it is.

Ok, I don’t know why no one is talking about this but it has reported and confirmed that a MAJOR character is going to die, as in for real, like Charlie, Boone or Shannon. By the end of THIS season. And I know it isn’t Kate. So I am guessing Hurley. He really doesn’t add much to the story. So take a guess at who it will be.
