Daniel’s mother
Lost has a tradition of putting some mind blowing element in the show that turns out to have a logical, even simple explaination (albeit in the rhealm of the fantastic). For example;
Question: Season one; What are polar bears doing on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific? Answer: Season three; They were brought there by scientists for genetic research.
Question: Season two; What is Libby doing at Santa Rosa in Hurley’s flashback?
Answer: (partial, this remains to be shown): When her husband David died she had a nervous breakdown and admitted herself into a rest facility. Either she later went to school and became a clinical psychologist or was one already and went a little haywire.
Question: Season three; How can Ms. Hawking know so much about Desmond and what he will do on the island?
Answer: (here is where I am inserting my theory)… DESMOND TOLD HER.
In season three We see Desmond prior to 1996 as a Monk being punched out by Ruth’s brother. He goes to her and tells her he had gone on a bender (‘had a few drinks…’) and blacked out. When he woke up brother Campbell was bent over him and Desmond felt himself filled with a new sense of fate, of purpose, but HE COULD NOT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS and assumed it was linked with a calling to God (which in a way it was).
In Season four, ‘The Constant’, Desmond has the ability to throw his consciousness back in time into his body from years ago. He can then go about and do things with all the memories of the present. When he leaves his body to go back into the future he forgets he ever said or did the things he said or did. The army will just note that he went Absent Without Leave from basic traning and throw him in the brig for a time, then discharge him.
The cut-in and cut-out points would seem to be some form of blunt trauma (Jimmy whatsit hitting him in the head with a cricket bat, falling off a ladder and hitting his head, an alcoholic bender…
So imagine 2007 Desmond, older, wiser, who know has the confort of knowing that he will get off the island and hook up with Penny… He meets up with Daniel Faraday’s mother, one of the leading physicists of her day, and she gives him the trick to going back in time. He sends himself back to a point before all this started, when his biggest worry was marrying the wrong girl… He takes up his body and goes to see Ms. Hawking (Mrs. Faraday) and convinces her that he is from the future (the red shoe on the other foot) and tells her she MUST be in a jewelry shop on such and such a day to convince him in turn that he cannot marry Penny.
At this point Ms. Hawking is rich, retired, perhaps doing charity work with brother Campbell. Desmond tells her she MUST do this or her only son will die on that self-same island. Then Desmond goes rigid and blanks out. He falls to the pavement and comes around a moment later, staring up at brother Campbell with some residual feeling of purpose… Campbell takes Desmond away and Ms. Hawking starts research into the mathematical possibilities of time travel. Her gifted son walks in and they start to work on this together. Convinced that there is something to all this she instructs Campbell to nurture Desmond as a noviciate. Hawking makes sure she is there to guide Desmond along in the jewelry shop and the square.
Andre7, I love this theory!
The only thing I am uncertain about is Ms. Hawking being Daniel’s mother.
The writers have kept us in total mystery, and would hate to think they would give that up, without a ‘wtf’ moment for the viewers, but I digress. You are likely right.
Everything you say about Desmond’s interaction with Ms Hawking makes total sense to me.
Desmond has an awareness of things, but is unable to help himself. Ms. Hawking is there to assist him when needed.
Lindelof has stated that season five will begin to answer more questions than it poses.
The last 32 episodes have to begin to lay the groundwork for a two hour series finale.
Anyways, What I outlined would not fit in one episode’s flashbacks. Besides, doing the Constant Redux is probably not the way they are going to go.
Andre7, I completely agree with you. It’s probably just me, not wanting to get that big of a hint on Daniel’s mother being Ms. Hawking. I would have preferred to be ‘awed’ by that!
Anyway, if that turns out to be the case, I’ll get over it. lol
I think you have nailed the premise of where the season is going, perfectly!
Can’t wait to read more theories from you.
Wow. I started reading this and thought you were totally going to take it a different direction after you said that “Desmond told her.”
From re-watching “The Constant” it didn’t seem as if Desmond could choose where he would go in time. It seemed as if his conscious took him where he needed to go. (The same way that Eloise needed to know how to run that maze at that particular moment, even though she ended up dying.)
So how would Desmond know where to go back to in order to find Ms. Hawking?
It seemed to me that Ms. Hawking was the one who found Desmond, the same way that Daniel found Desmond during the season premiere because Daniel knew that Desmond could help outside of the constraints of the rules.
If Ms. Hawking is Daniel’s mother, and she is obviously VERY aware of what ‘time’ (said tongue-in-cheek) constraints or issues are facing the O6 and Ben, then it seems to me that she is “special” and has some similar abilities that Daniel and Desmond do.
So at first to me, her dissuading Desmond from marrying Penny had more to do with that she knew the need for him to go to the island as well as get off the island and help re-connect the O6 and the island.
I like your idea that she could tell Desmond how to travel, and in such, find his particular purpose from that time of blacking out.
So are you saying that because she can somehow pass along the ‘trick’ of time travel, that is possibly why she is directing Ben in his coordination of getting the group back together within a certain period of time in order for it all to work? (My mind just drifted over to Doc and Marty and the clock striking midnight…sorry!)
– Someday maybe I’ll have a theory, and not just comments. Thanks for letting me process here! –
I like this theory. I’ve been back and forth as to if she really is Daniels mother.
Daniel tells Desmond to find her in Oxford, yet there she is in LA with Ben. That’s the only thing that puts me off the idea.
But because Daniel didn’t get a chance to tell Desmond his mother name I think it was done deliberatley to set us up for the big reveal – and to me there’s no one else who we already know who could fit the bill better than Ms. Hawking.
It woul be just like these writers to connect Daniel with, say, Claire’s aunt.
Or with Emily Locke….
Nah…
nah is right, think about it, faraday and Hawking, the producers/writers do a good job of keeping names that fit together outside of lost together, and these 2 scientists are no different. Good post…dig deeper ii love it.
Good observation about the names. This would place Charlotte on the side of the ‘faith’ or ‘philosopher’ people with Locke (as C.S. Lewis was a recognized theologian). As opposed to the science-minded individuals such as Faraday… Let me think that one through and do a seperate post…
Did you notice Ms. Hawking’s pendulum experiment? She seems to devise some conclusions about how much time Ben has (70 hours) from computer models of the pendulum swing.
This would feed into Chaos theory wouldn’t it? If total randomness and seeming chaos in the world have slowly been giving way to order and predestination, if some cosmic experiment has been moving inexorably towards some kind of divine conclusion…
That would tie all those cool Easter eggs, all those pesky links between characters together… BUT HOW?
MHmmn… Let me think that one through and do a seperate post…
I thought it looked as if it had an ancient/donkey wheel/hyroglyphics appeal to it. I touch on this and make more of a case of who Hawking is helping really in my ‘window’ theory, accidentaly located in ‘fun’
Nice catch on the names AES. I guess Dan and Ms. Hawking will turn out to be mother and son.
I do think there will be a ‘faith’ connection. Ms. Hawking happened to be in a church, and Brother Campbell is in a Monastery.
I liked this theory as it is self-consistent, eat your heart out Novikov! Good job on linking it all together.
i think, dabs, we may learn, many faith aspects on lost are used for coverups. Im thinking maybe they view it (the temples/churches/moestaries)as a place of worship with many inconspicuous natures surrounding. Whos gonna bust the door of a church in to find answers about the island and time travel…DESMOND THATS WHO!
Funny, you should say that AES. I am doing internal battle with my brain.
A few things are leading me to believe, all is not what it seems with ‘the faithful’….more on that later!
Churches throughout history, have been used for many a cover-up. Nice thinking, as always!
When you are ready for more, you let me know Dabs, i got something good to go with your brain battle problem, let me know. Funny you said that..we had a great discussion on something that made me think more that way!
haha AES, I think it was that discussion that got my brain kick started in that direction, so I’ll take you up on your offer!
