Soothing sounds of the Smoke Monster

Has anyone else heard sounds during the show that sound eerily similar to the sound that the Smoke Monster makes when on screen? The specific examples I have are from Season 1. There is another time when Rose makes a statement to the effect of “that reminds me of the Bronx.” I either read that somewhere or made a mental note of it. To the specific examples, and please let me know your thoughts. Is it a reincarnation of the characters largest fear? Biggest sin? Something else?

1) Season 1 – Episode 2 Walkabout – around 9:45
When Locke basically gets told to get to work, he starts performing calculations on an old paper roller calculator. The printing of the paper sounds a lot like the Monster.

2) Season 1 – Episode 2 Whatever the Case May Be – around 5:15
Around the time Kate swims underwater to retrieve the Halliburton case.

3) Season 1 – Episode 2 same as above – around 35:00
When Kate opens the safe deposit box, the sound occurs.

Anyways, curious to hear what others think.

Originally from a town near Seattle, WA, now living in Memphis, TN. Yikes. Late bloomer when it comes to Lost, started watching based on the recommendation of a friend near the middle of the third season. I think. I then raced through the episodes online and have since gone through the seasons 3X. Not sane. I work as an engineer and grappling is a huge passion of mine. I am both excited, to see how it all gets explained, and sorry, I don't want the show to end, to have this be the final season.

  1. I live in the Bronx and work in Manhattan. Every day the smoke monster is following me. The unique sound of a taxi meter happens to be one of the samples used for the effect. I highly doubt that it has any significance. I could be wrong, of course, but good sound engineers tend to look all over the place for new samples to use for effects, so this just seems to be a sound that tickled the fancy of a creative technician.
