THE REAL GRANDFATHER PARADOX

As I said yesterday, I love backing outsiders

Right here it goes! 🙂

First off, any place that sports a time machine can create strange families displaced through time. An example of this would be oul boy Chang and his son Miles working alongside each other in the past. At that time Miles is present as both a newborn and an adult. That proves that this sort of thing is at least possible.

First of folks the name is a big substantiating clue. Desmond Hume and Penelope Widmore name their son Charlie after the late Charlie from Madchester of Driveshaft that dies during season three. If Charlie Hume became a professional off the island and took his mother’s maiden name you would end up with Charles Widmore.

Charles Widmore’s undue hatred of Desmond Hume may be another clue. When Desmond attempts to ask for Penelope’s hand in marriage (better known as Penny) from her father Charles Widmore, he outright refuses and then insults Desmond. Bear in mind folks that the antiques dealer, who turns out to be Eloise Hawking, Widmore’s love interest and Daniel Faraday’s mother, refuses to sell Desmond a ring that he would have used to marry Penny.

Is Eloise Penny’s mother? Widmore is her father, or at least that role has been assumed. Is Widmore so protective of Penny because she is his daughter or because she will become his mother? Further evidence shows that Hawking and Widmore are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their goals. Hawking shoots her adult son in the back close to the end of season five before he is even born.

Right, you come this far so let’s go a little further! 🙂

She learns who he is, leaves the island and births Faraday with Widmore. They are Faraday’s parents. Also, Widmore is seen getting removed in handcuffs from the island by Ben Linus. “I’ll be seeing you boy” – (Gad I love that line from Jim Robinson) 🙂

One of the reasons is that he had a child with an outsider from off the island. Does that unlawful union lead to Daniel or Penny? Hawking raises Faraday and never tells him how he will die. Is that just plain coldness or actually necessary for the safety of the world and the island?

Both Eloise and Widmore could know if they didn’t take those actions Widmore and Daniel might never even exist. Timelines can get very messy when time travel is introduced. Imagine what Marty McFly went through at The Enchantment Under The Sea dance in Back to the Future but on a grander scale – head hurt yet?

Another substantial clue comes in an almost subliminal form. Hair. During season five Widmore is seen on the island at roughly the age of 30 to 35. Widmore’s hair looks almost identical to Desmond’s hair and the hair of Desmond’s son Charlie. This is seen briefly in a season five episode in which Ben Linus goes to kill Penny to settle a score for the loss of his own daughter at the hands of Widmore’s hired mercenaries.

So there we have it, Desmond Hume may be Charles Widmore’s father!

The creepy thing about all this is that, if it is true, Widmore may be his own grandfather.

Only time will tell! 🙂

  1. Eloise could be Penny’s mother. That they’ve kept the mother a mystery should equal payoff surprise. He was kicked off the island for having a child with a woman who was off the island … and as far as I can guess the leaders all were born off island, so maybe it’s ‘a rule’ that you can’t make a dynasty. Maybe they agreed to split up the kids (could be part of their plan, to do something and you don’t fly the heirs on the same plane or they could crash on an island and be ‘lost’ forever).

  2. It is an odd thought but something that could happen in the world of Lost.

To make this work though, Penny, Desmond, and baby Charlie would have had to travel back in time (well, at least Charlie would have) so that he can grow up to be the 70 year old man he is in 2004/07.

Wouldn’t he also find it odd that his daughter (who he, persumably, named after his mother) fell in love with someone with the same name as his father? Granted, Charles knows alot more about the island, the time travel, course correction etc.

But if he does know that Desmond is his father, why try and stop him from marrying Penny? If he was successful, then in theory, he would never have been born.

  3. Lemuria, I think you have some solid things going on here!

The writers have stated many times that there are NO paradoxes in Lost. Lostpedia has confirmed that Ms. Hawking is NOT Penny’s biological mother.

That aside, I agree with you that there certainly does seem to be some crossovers in the familial lineage beyond our present knowledge.

At this point, I think we can safely assume that it is more than just mere coincidence that binds the characters on Lost together. Great thoughts on this, and I would love to hear you expand on them further. I think you are definitely onto something.

I particularly like, (although don’t know if it’s true) your reasoning behind Widmore keeping Desmond from initially marrying Penny.

As Charles and Eloise were on the same page about sending Daniel to his impending doom, I think it likely they would ensure Desmond got to ‘the island’ to fulfill his role in similar fashion.

I think it is a reasonable assumption that after Widmore was exiled by Ben from ‘the island’, that a pregnant Eloise may have left on her own accord to be with the father of her unborn child.

I believe that there is much more to ‘the family tree’ on Lost.

    Nice theory!

  4. So Penny and Des go back in tiem via island but die conveniently with the black/white stones and then get layed in the caves while widmore/charlie grows up with the others, this makes the timelines of the clothes make sense??

  5. Sorry daddyx for killing your brain 🙂 and dabs the writers said there were no paradoxes??? I think they also said there were be no time travel as well – I also wouldn’t fall in love with Lostpedia in a hurry! Anyhow we won’t argue over minor statements – but you’ve you all made excellent points folks and it’s good to finally find an open-minded Lost crowd who don’t put you down all the time for trying different avenues and who constantly fire out criticism (no chips on shoulders here) – to be honest folks I’m just in from the bar after about 10 pints of Guinness and the French knocking us Irish out of the World Cup play-offs – I honestly think my brain’s gonna explode – hopefully Rousseau’s will as well!!! 🙂 – to be continued……..

  6. sorry about thierrys hand-ywork lemuria. while it is interesting, I believe the only way that little charlie is charles widmore is if widmore isn’t penny’s real father. I doubt the writers would bring that craziness into the show.

like the train of thought though.
