The REAL purpose of the flash sideways.

So far from what we’ve seen in the flash sideways, everything seems to be going quite well for everyone (apart from Kate). Some have speculated that the flash sideways could actually be the ENDING of the show, after this war is over and the losties get to turn back time and change what happened and live happily ever after.
But i think the writers are lulling us into a false sense of security.
I think the writers are using a very clever plot device, which will confirm just how high the stakes really are.
The losties have constantly been told how important it is that they are on the island, and how important the island is itself.
The losties planned to use that bomb to change the past so they never came to the island, and i think this flash sideways is showing us a world where they didn’t, but its not as sweet as it seems.

I think in this flash sideways we’re going to see what would/would’ve happened if the islands magical magicness didn’t exist (whether its because of the bomb, or i suspect something else) and the losties never came to the island, and i think its going to end in catastrophe. Whatever the island is, i believe it is extremely important in ways we have yet to find out, and i suspect in a world where its power ceases to exist, and the events we have seen didn’t play out, something very very bad is going to happen. The very thing they are all there to prevent in the first place.

So, i think the sideways flash is a sort of ‘what if’ scenario for the viewers to see just how crucial the events of the past 5 seasons really are. We’ll get to see this all play out. Its a clever way to show us this disastrous event, without it actually happening to our losties.

This isn’t a theory, just my feelings on where the sideways flashes are heading.

I'm a hiphop producer from London, and obviously a huge fan of Lost. Its a bit of a love/hate thing as its made me cynical of all other TV shows (Heroes being one of the most overrated poorly written shows i've seen). Never been into much big american TV drama or Sci-fi, more into british comedy, but Lost has been amazing, and i really hope it continues that awesomeness in its final season. I'm usually pretty good at predicting the end of a story which can annoy people around me, but this show is so intricately constructed, even in its 2nd to last season, i still don't have a clue. I'm trying my best though.

  1. Yeah, the sideways flashing seems to be showing us what would happen if the island had sunk at some point… probably because of the bomb. There are things on the island under water that we know were built later (like the DI stuff) and we know that the changes in the alternate timeline go back farther than just the time they would have crashed (like Jack’s appendix scar). So I guess it’s kind of showing us “what would have happened if someone sunk the island in 1977”. Maybe we’ll eventually see how long Richard can tread water in the alternate timeline…

  2. whats up with the votes system on here, i’m sure they’re messed up. Some theories have like 2-3 votes with no comments, and this has got 2 decent votes yet the 2 commenters don’t like it.
    Wierd.

Anyway, sideways be showing us a reality where the island has lost its power, and in turn MIB has returned home, wherever that is.

Could it be in the outside world? Maybe some of the characters we are seeing in it aren’t who we think they are?

  3. I was thinking along the exact same lines when I was watching the enhanced version of The Substitute…I found it interesting that the pop up said something to the effect that the flash sideways shows what would have happened if the plane had landed safely (as opposed to saying this is “present time” or giving us a date like they did in the episodes where the losties were moving through time).

  4. I completely agree. This really goes along with my theory of the island being the Earth’s constant. But we still have to take note that the island existed in the alt. time line before ’74. I think that the catastrophe that is going to happen in the alt. time line will reveal what Jacob has been orchestrating for people to protect. Which is the thing that also Flock keeps telling people is ‘nothing’. Like in the cave with sawyer.

  5. The alt timeline just confuses me. However, I thought that when jack found the coffin again with Hurley that the timelines were starting to catch up to each other or connect? Since they are still looking for the coffin off the island. Christian will be a big player somehow as will widmore I think. what that means I have no clue.

  6. i hope you are right. i never loved the alt. its cool to see the characters interact but…i want some damn answers. if catastrophe occurs without the island in the alt, it may answer the question of why the island is so important. me gusta!

  7. Someone here (can’t remember who!) had a still shot of Claire’s ultrasound photo in alt-time & it was date stamped Oct 2004, but the original plane crash was Sept 2004, right? What happened to the month?

  8. The more i think about this, the more i believe that the happily ever after stories we’re seeing in the ALT, are setting us up for a huge fall.
The writers are leading us to believe there is a link between the two timelines, and that there might be a crossover, or merging, or that Jack might be having some de ja vu moments, or that maybe the island isn’t so important afterall so we’re still unsure of whats gong on, then BOOM!!!
    We never saw it coming.

I’m sure that the characters we love, their counterparts in the ALT are all going to die and we’ll see it happen!
Could it be the end of the world as we know it in the other reality?
If it is the case, i’m really exited to find out how.

  9. Man, now this is confusing, but if as

    ClaireBlueEyes

says ‘the pop up said something to the effect that the flash sideways shows what would have happened if the plane had landed safely’ and we take into consideration the ‘whatever happened, happened’ idea,

what if it was Juliet using the bomb that actually SAVED THE ISLAND FROM SINKING!!

The alt is showing us a reality where the losties were never on the island, and in turn didn’t do what they did in ‘the incident’ and this is why the island sunk!!!

Man, I gotta write a theory on this one.

  10. It doesn’t make sense that the plane just landed safely. Ex. From wheree did David come?

Trying to figure out ‘why’ Rose/Bernard were so danged happy in sideways seemed a fun mental game … but it makes less and less sense that because Juliet used the bomb the island sunk so … Locke’s dad’s mister wonderful!?!

Better have a big payoff. Currently, just wastin’ time w/boring stories that make no sense (oh boy, Jack’s son afraid to mention to his dad he’s a piano prodigy … like Dogan’s kid. Oh look, it’s Kate, running. Let’s waste time getting her cuffs off.)

  11. I think that because Ben killed Jacob, Jacob wasn’t able to go back in time & contact the Candidates, so the plane didn’t crash, etc. This was MIB’s attempt to stop Jacob from bringing the Candidates to the island, to stop him from time travelling back to the time when he contacted them. I think that Jacob is trying to get Jack to do something (not sure what yet) that will reset everything somehow, so that Jacob isn’t killed, and can touch the candidates, etc. Chicken/egg again, right?

  12. In my interpretation, David was reluctant to tell Jack he was a piano prodigy wasn’t because he was afraid, but because Jack was so forceful and pushing of his son when he was younger because Christian had always told Jack he couldn’t do this or that because he didn’t have what it takes.

I also strongly believe that these aren’t flash sideways, and are instead a retrospective look at what has happened as a result of the detonation of the Jughead in ‘The Incident’. To me this would make alot of sense. Don’t know if anyone else has picked up on this but when Kate and Jin were with the pair from the Temple, one mentioned that he was one of the guards that Kate knocked down when she escaped from prison 3 years ago.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t remember Kate being imprisoned in the original timeline. Also, in ‘The Lighthouse’ Jack was unsure of how he got his scar on his torso (later being told by his mother that it was when his appendix was taken out). Could it be possible that those who were responsible for detonating the bomb are living an alternate reality? Unlikely because it seems pretty hard for me to explain with it making any sense at all.

Anyway, I’m rambling and sorry for being inaccurate. First time poster, joined today. Watch out for Boone, he will be significant in this season.

  13. @Theresafallsupthestairs..

That was the same guard. Remember in season 3 sawyer & kate were locked in cage for a bunch of episodes… (they got it on for the cameras and everything..)
