Jacob and Widmore Vs Ben…everyone Vs MIB.
Written 30th March
I’m sure people have said this before, but I tend to agree that perhaps Widmore was meant to be the leader of the Others all along and is the “friend coming to the Island” that dead Jacob was referring to (it doesn’t matter that Hurley and Jack didn’t end up helping him get there as J admitted this wasn’t the real reason for them going to the lighthouse in the 1st place) This could be why Ben developed his tumour, why Jacob never granted him an audience and why he was so standoffish with him (“What about you?”) right before he was killed – he was pissed off that Ben had ousted his friend and intended leader of the Others. The hostilities between MIB and Widmore, including the portable sonar fences Widmore has brought to the Island tend to reinforce this idea I think.
Thoughts?
what about when young Ben was shot?
Widmore asked Richard why he brought young Ben to the Temple to be healed.
Richard told Widmore that Jacob wanted it done.
Kudos for thinking this through, but I think that Widmore is finally going to get what is coming to him. And, it aint pretty!
I’ve thought this for awhile, Jacob was trapped in the cabin and MIB was posing as Jacob leading the others. This would explain alot and fit nicely into what you wrote above.
Think if that were true it would mean:
MIB had Ben exile Widmore off the island.
MIB ordered the purge.
MIB wanted Bens body healed.
MIB corrupted Ben at a young age to turn on DHARMA.
It would also explain:
Why MIB didn’t want the freighter crew there.
Why the others were always trying to keep people off the island.
Why Ben had the ability to release the Smoke monster.
Why Jacob never talked to Ben.
good thoughts on that wharfrat..
I’m really open to this theory..It’s amazing we’re getting so close to the end of the story and yet we still don’t know whether Ben or Widmore is really the bad guy..
One line that really stands out to me is Widmore’s conversation with Ben as he was walking on to the sub about to be exiled from the island..they said (had to look this up in Lostpedia, my paraphrasing was ruining the emphasis 🙂 :
BEN: Charles. I came to say good-bye.
WIDMORE: [Chuckles] No, you didn’t. You came to gloat.
BEN: No, don’t act as if I wanted this. You brought this on yourself.
WIDMORE: Are you quite certain you want to do this, Benjamin?
BEN: You left the Island regularly. You had a daughter with an outsider. You broke the rules, Charles.
WIDMORE: And what makes you think you deserve to take what’s mine?
BEN: Because I won’t be selfish. Because I’ll sacrifice anything to protect this Island.
WIDMORE: You wouldn’t sacrifice Alex.
BEN: You’re the one who wanted her dead, Charles, not the Island.
WIDMORE: I hope you’re right, Benjamin, because if you aren’t, and it is the Island that wants her dead, she’ll be dead. And one day, you’ll be standing where I’m standing now. You’ll be the one being banished, and then you’ll finally realize that you cannot fight the inevitable. I’ll be seeing you, boy.
So it’s ironic she did die, and Ben was thinking it was “against the rules” that she did..and Widmore’s back at the island with his own sub, and maybe very soon Ben himself will be the one handcuffed about to board a sub…
I too think the Others were being led by MiB for a long time without knowing it. Another point about Ben is when he sees his mother as a child and tells Richard that he did. Richard takes this as being a good sign that Ben is meant to someday join them. Hurley’s gift to see dead people Is a good sign that he is important and special, but I think Ben was just seeing a manifestation of Smokey. It would be just another sign that he was manipulated by MiB.
