It took him a long time/question about black white theme

Rival says that the whole procedure to disguise himself as locke took a long time. I feel it may be safe to assume that all of the visions that control Locke’s decisions were guided by Rival. This may also include the healing.
In addition, Christian can no longer be associated with Jacob, as many assumed before (because he was in the cabin, which we now know has nothing to do with jacob anymore). It may be possible that visions of Christian were the work of Rival. Recall that Christian is the reason that Jack returned to the island. Jacob never visited Jack – maybe Jack really didn’t belong back on the island? Maybe Jacob was trying to free them from putting the bomb off, but Rival didn’t allow it?
It seems clear that John becoming the leader was set up by the rival in order to help him take control of his body and then his death (you have to die~possibly wouldnt have happened if he hadnt made christian say it) and return were controlled by rival as well (although jacob seemed to want hurley to return…)
One side note that I was hoping to ask about – remember the episode where locke and michaels son are playing the game with black and white pieces, and john says that they can live together? It is clear that these two characters are very important – John is taken over by the rival, and we are not quite clear what walt’s power is (but we know that he has one).
