What lies in the shadow of the statue? – When to dig, not where!

I thought this was probably the strangest part of the “Dead is Dead” episode. So naturally I have been thinking about it the most.

How does Ilana know anyting about a statue or the island? This leads me to assume that she was hired by Widmore to get on that plane because when asked by Sayid if she was hired by Ben, she was pretty convincing that she had no idea who Ben was especially with Ben standing right next to them on the plane.

Maybe she is referring to a statue different than the one we are all thinking of? I doubt it!

If she is talking about the giant Anubis statue (IMO that was Anubis) then I wonder how she knows it even exists. Was that statue still in one piece when Widmore was on the island? We have no way of knowing what time period that was, it was a brief moment, and we know is that the well had not even been built yet.

If Widmore was around when the statue was in one piece, I think they buried something (the jughead) in it’s shadow (duh) BUT! a shadow is cast in different spots throughout the day, so you have to know the exact time of day to know where the shadow is cast to know where to dig, right?

Anyone else agree that you have to know the specific time of when to dig, rather than where!!!!

  1. i like the idea. do you think they are trying to retrieve the bomb and potentially use it as a threat? what do you think is inside the steal case? a nuclear detonator? or some radio gear? or a frozen mr. widmore?

  2. Joshcgs, I see we are on a similar wave length here!

Very good thoughts. I think I provided some answers in my theory for why the code-word is being used by Ilana.

I am fairly certain it is Ben she is working for, but realize I might be wrong on that front, but I wrestled around with it, in my mind, and feel it is Ben.

I had really never considered in last nights episode what could be in the box. It may have something to do with Jughead. Now that would be a twist! I should have thought of it, but didn’t.

  3. Well my Thoughts are that Llana works for Widmore and Ben Knows it. Maybe the one thing he knows for sure right now. Keep going with this!

  4. I dont know, Dabia has got me thinking that maybe Ilana is working for Ben, hence why Cesar was killed to get him out of her way.

Or maybe just to make Ben look awesome because I really hated Cesar and loved the moment Ben shot him without even thinking about it, not a flinch!

Thats Ben Linus – NO FLINCH!

  5. DABIA –

What if she is working for a third party!

Like Ann Arbor, the base for the DI!!!!

They still have to be pretty pissed about all of their people being killed and equipment being stolen.

Maybe that is who they are! CRAZY!

  6. Joshcgs, I think it is possible that there is a third party involvement, but the recollection between Ilana and Ben is too hard to ignore.

That aside, Ben wants to know everything, and he was watching Widmore as much as Widmore was watching him. I would count on Ben knowing who may have been on the plane, but you never know.

  7. I do not think frozen Mr. Widmore is in the case lol.

He has made it pretty clear that he has been trying to get back to the island for 20 years and has been unsuccessful, even though I think he will find a way!!!!!!!

And not frozen in a box, that is probably just weapons and crap for Ilana to raise hell with.

They are going to try and kill Locke, as predicted by Walt, and Ben is now ordaned to follow and protect Locke, so now I think mayyyyyybe she is working for Widmore again, sheesh idk.

  8. Cause Ben is BadA$$, and I sort of agree with Dabia that Ben was getting Cesar out of Ilana’s way. He had a delusion of grandeur thinking he is going to tell John Locke what to do on his island.

I would have shot his a$$ too!!

  9. if you read this theory you have to go and read Dabia’s theory called

    “Ilana is working for….”

They are linked and contrast with each other.

  10. I just wanted to let you know, as I did in my theory, that I also like your theory very much! I think both are very plausible ideas, and give the members on the site different viewpoints to consider!

    Well done, Joshcgs!

  11. I cant lie, I for some reason cant come up withanything good about Ilana.
I really like both of your ideas, and think that there is a possiblity of different aspects of each theory being correct.

  12. AES, those are my thoughts as well. I think both theories are complimentary.

Joshcgs, hits on certain elements I never thought of, either, so it is a lot of food for thought!

  13. “In the shadow of” is an archaic terminology. We don’t see it much today… but I think it can mean basically two things… the metaphorical sense is that anything effected by something (especially negatively) is under it’s shadow. The literal sense does not strictly mean in the area directly beneath something, just near it and visible. Like, you could say that Pompeii was in the shadow of Herculanium… which is both metaphorical as the volcano destroyed the city, and literal as the city was nearby. So, the phrase “What is in the shadow of the statue?” could quite easily apply to the Well and the Orchid and the Wheel and all of that fun stuff.

  14. What look between Ben and Ilana are you guys talking about? The one on the plane as Ben was boarding? I took that as Ben giving Sayid a look. Sort of like, “See, if I want you on this plane, you’ll be on this plane.” As soon as Ben passes, Sayid turns to Ilana and asks if she’s working for Benjamin Linus. I too believe she is working for Ben.

  15. In roman history the day Julias cesar died when he was stabbed to death his body laid in the shadow of (i think his own statue or someone elses) so it funny that cesar died right before we heard that line.

  16. Aftr much thought, I bet the phrase itself has no real meaning – another red herring for us. I think it is to identify plants on the plane – sort of like “What did one snowman say to the other”

Right after she clocks Lapidus, she says to her associate, “It’s time…go get the others” This is how they know who’s on their team.

  17. **Spoiler**
I Think they are the one’s Who destroy the statue.
Maybe there is C4 or Explosives in the metal crate along with weapons.
If there is a shadow there then there has to be a statue somwhere.
And as for who Llana is working for? I think it’s Widmore & Llana could be the sister of either Ana Lucia or Naomi(i know it was code but would work to be a coincidence & revenge since neiter Girl came back)

  18. Bing – This site is not for spoilers, there are sites for that.
Also, how is your guess of something to happen a spoiler? That would make everything on this site a spoiler.

  19. ya my bad i just didnt see that idea on here, sometimes i get upset seeing things i should be thinking of and i ususally just get insight on things that have happened.

i dont usually do that. but im prob wrong no biggie.

  20. The statue has already been destroyed by the time Ilana&crew are on the island.

What I think happened is that, as instructed by Faraday,

Richard, Widmore, Ellie, buried the Jughead. But they had to make sure they buried it in a very safe place, so that no1 could ever find it! Also a place they could find it incase they ever needed to use it to their own advantage.

When Widmore was banished from the island, they probably destroyed the statue so that he could never send anyone to find the bomb and use it against them.

Which is exactly what I think Ilana is trying to do,

Maybe Widmore does not know that the statue has been destroyed, and he has sent Ilana to find the bomb he buried in its shadow all those years ago!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Josh,

You could definately be right but that would mean Llana is working for Widmore & not Ben.

My only problem is why would Widmore want Sayid?
He did kill most of Widmore’s guys (Off island work for Ben).

Llana could of just been a passenger like Ceasar or anybody else on plane.
Everything she did has benefitted Ben,
Sayid told Ben he would’nt come back so he hired her (Cause Sayid is prob lookin for a man to get him) & she has info on the work Sayid did for Ben.

  22. Widmore definitely knows more than we think he does. He knew where to exit point was, and that was not how he left the island (he left on the sub)

He also was the one who told Locke to bring everyone to Eloise Hawking, which Ben ends up doing.

Eloise probably does not like Ben, but said hey, atleast your all here! She even said Ben was a liar and has probably been in that room before.

So Eloise probably told Widmore anything he did not already know, and he probably knows that Sayid has been killing his people, he does not really seem to care, I bet he has an endless supply.

So he knows the Sayid hates Ben and wants to or would kill him.

So from Widmores POV – Sayid is pefect to go back, he will get rid of Ben, our mutual enemy!

  23. WOW that makes alot of sense Josh & i thought i had you stumped but you open my mind up to this great thinking.
That means Widmore probably will meet up with Sayid & figure out He is the one who shot Ben & thats why he has Llana bring him back cause he HAS TO shoot Ben but that means Widmore knows alot more than we think…like u said maybe thats how he knew to fake all 815’s Death cause he knew where they were when nobody else did, He could’nt have known about the 6 getting back because it hasnt happened but he would know when and what plane crashes from Sayid.

sorry if too long and repititious you got me thinking and those are fresh thoughts.

  24. Nah I love he feedback,

I would not buy too much stock in my theories because I am usually wrong, but I try…

I just know that Widmore is somehow behind the original 815 flight because it was Abbadon (Widmores guy who convicned Locke to go on the walkabout, he even asks Locke if he remembers that it was him!)

I really think Widmore hired Ilana and sent her to find the Jughead to kill everyone that banished him!

He probably hates the other and wants to wipe them all out and start his own civilization on the island.

He has tried for 20 years to get back but cannot, so he sends people like Ilana to do his work for him.

  25. Ya I know what your saying.
but Llana has to have a motive for being there besides as Widmore’s “Chess Piece” thats why i think she is related to Naomi but I think Ana Lucia Makes more sense to me.
IDK if it were based on looks & demeanor I think its Ana cause Llana seems more hispanic then W/E Naomi was.
(Would give her a motive for being there to find Ana)

If were talking storyline then it makes sense Llana to be Naomi’s Sister, And would Def give her a motive to be there but for Ben not Widmore cause Ben wants Locke Dead & Locke killed Naomi(not characteristic of Locke) so idk i should be paying you guys just for hearing my crazy thoughts but hence the name.

  26. good point!

Locke did kill Naomi, Ilana could want revenge (tell my sister I love her)

these “codes” have more meaning then just a secret word (new england clam chowder)

how would miles know she has no sister,

    You may be absoulely right!

I am pretty sure we are done with Ana Lucia, i dont know why but i feel like her character was pointless. Naomi has a bigger role!

  27. what did she besides bang sawyer and get shot by michael,,, nothing i can think of.

some litte girl who was “changed” by the others asked Jack “how is Ana Lucia” that was strange,

    The Fly Attendant, whats her name? Cindy, check this out from lostpedia;

“Jack wakes in the morning to a group of people watching him. A woman approaches, and he recognizes her as Cindy, the flight attendant from Flight 815. He asks her why she is with them. At first she starts replying, “They’re not

  28. What I have to disagree Naomi was so not Important unless she is Llana’s sister Only she was brought to the Island & Ana was destined to be there just like everybody else she is significant but maybe she was already on the island IDK thats a big stretch meaning so is Llana maybe related to Richard or something or an other.

  29. Oh i Didnt see your other message,
I actually wrote something in my 1st theory about how the flight attendant Cindy,
Who Is the same Flight Attendant who gave Jack the extra lil bottle of Booze,
Which he “So Conveinantly” used to clean his wound that Kate will stitch up, HMMM?
I thought maybe Time Loop & Jack isnt fully remembering,
kind of like what Miles was telling Hurley about having past Conversation W/ no memory,

Your kind of making me think more about how
Ana Lucia’s role is way more important then
just “Bangin” Sawyer who by the way is my
new favorite character thanks to you reminding me that they “Bumped Uglies” B4,
Sawyer has been with what ? 4 girls(So Far) Sawyer “DA PIMP!!” i was discussing W/
some family about how many girls he soiled
I forgot bout Ana. Man I’m not racist but
Sawyer should Def be Black, He has been locked up (couple times) has like 2 G/F &
has a Baby’s Momma waiting back home I understand why he jumped out that copter now
hahaha I wouldnt come back either to that mess. (IM Mexican myself ha that would be funny EL Sawyer but he is white so if anybody is offended sorry dont hate)

  30. I am new to this blog, so here it goes:

I read some other ideas and someone brought up the idea that the statue isn’t that of Anubis but of Taweret. I think they could be right. If you look closely it resembles Tawaret a lot from behind. There are distinct differences by what the statue is holding, the hat it is wearing, and the ears. If you do some background checking it shows that Taweret is the Egyption goddess: deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. She was the demon wife to Apep, the original god of evil. Taweret was seen as one who protected against evil by restraining it.

This logic somewhat makes sense because for all we know, when the statue was whole everyone was able to give childbirth. When we only saw the foot, no woman was able to bear children. Not until the oceanic flight crash landed. Was this some sort of curse upon the “others”? Did they destroy the statue? We never found out what happened to all the pregnant mothers and unborn children, nor di we find out what happened to the stolen oceanic children. Could it be a grave? Could it be the home of the smoke monster?

More questions than answers. Sorry. Just some ideas to keep the wheels in the brain turning.

*Thanks to wikipedia: the lazy man’s encyclopedia. LOL*

  31. doninhu – Great call on Tawaret!

I never heard of Tawaret before, but after your mention I did some research and WOW, I think you may have figured out what the statue is!

    Great call!
