Across the Sea and Into My Brain

After watching “Across the Sea”, I gave up my long-standing belief that Nemesis is “evil”. I think the Smoke Monster may be not-such-a-good-thing, but Jacob’s brother just wanted to leave the friggin’ island. Jacob ends up creating the Smoke Monster, so HE is responsible for his brother being “stuck” that way. Throughout the episode, I just felt worse and worse for Jacob’s brother. He was curious, independent, strong-willed, and just wanted to travel and see what was out in the world. His mother held him down and Jacob continued to do so after her death. I feel that Jacob is the protector of the Source and that if the Smoke Monster gets off the island, it may not be such a good thing. However, if Jacob’s brother were allowed to just leave as a man, he would never have become the Smoke Monster to begin with. What a tragedy. Kudos to Titus Welliver for a very good performance.

I also loved to see that it was Jacob’s brother who built the Well-Wheel (was going to call it the frozen wheel, but it wasn’t frozen just yet, and “donkey wheel” just pisses me off). The combination of water and Source energy seem to have an “odd” effect; it appears that turning the wheel mixes some water with the Source, creating a discharge effect. The Smoke Monster itself was created in the cave where the water met the Source as well.

Pretty damn good episode, if you ask me.

Started watching Lost in September 2009; finished Seasons 1-5 in 20 days.. my wife was not thrilled during this time. I am a believer in John Locke and that he may somehow still play a key (and good) role on the island.

  1. I’m also getting the feeling that his intentions might not be so bad afterall, and maybe what MIB has been doing is actually in favour of the losties… or maybe not, i dunno how that would play out.
The mothers last words ‘thank you’ made me think that maybe death in the world of lost is a good thing, and you go to a better place (the ATL?), maybe MIBs attempts to wipe out the 815ers was for ‘the greater good’.

  2. It may have started out as just wanting to leave the island, which is all fine and good. But when he started messing with the islands energy and showing the other people on the island that it can do things when his fake mama told him how important it was that they never find it….he had already crossed the line. By the time he lost his humanity by dying and becoming the smoke monster, id say all good intentions went out the window. He doesnt just wanna leave anymore, I think he wants to destroy the light for good.

  3. I also enjoyed the episode quite a bit. Sure, a tad Disneyish at times, but awesome all the same.

I just commented the same thing basically in another post. I saw no wrong in what MIB was doing. Why he thought he had to kill “mom” is still a little over my head.

  4. i loved this episode too. it explained alot. but i still dont understand: why couldnt his brother leave the island????! it bothers me that he doesnt have a name, hes just as important haha
