Brought to the Island for a Purpose

Each decision you make, even the hundreds of tiny ones throughout each day, ones that you hardly even notice and take for granted, end up effecting the outcome and your future. The trouble is, since you can’t see into the future, you have no idea which choices are going to hurt you or help you (running the red light instead of waiting, missing the train and taking the next one, forgetting your keys inside the house, etc). However, if you COULD see the future, you could then put into place tiny “shifts” to “course correct” the outcome to how you want it. If anyone has ever seen the movie “Paycheck” with Ben Affleck, it shows it perfectly. His character sees the future and prepares himself a bag of items (matches, tape, paper clip, etc) that he needs later on to get out of randomly bad situations.

Jacob can see the future, whether it’s through the use of the frozen wheel or otherwise. His “bag of stuff” is the people he brings to the island. And, like John Locke said to Jack in a early episode, they were each brought their for a reason. Perhaps each “candidate” is not really a candidate at all, in the sense that they are going to replace Jacob. Perhaps Jacob already knows who he wants (Jack). He chose Jack because he’s a leader. The others Jacob brought to the island serve a specific function to help Jack become the leader of the island and Jacob’s replacement.

Hugo can speak to the dead, giving Jack the ability to talk with Jacob through him as well as to get Richard on Jack’s side by talking with Isabella. Sawyer is a con-man that Jacob picked so that he could “sniff out” Nemesis’ lies about his intentions, thereby slowing down Nemesis’ path to acheive his goal. Locke was picked by Jacob perhaps because he knew that Nemesis would “copy” him. I’m not sure about the purpose there, exactly, and Sayid and Kwon I’m still nto sure about. I just see the “power” each one seems to have, especially Hugo and Sawyer, and how that seems to be playing a role in getting Jack to where he needs to be. Thoughts?

Started watching Lost in September 2009; finished Seasons 1-5 in 20 days.. my wife was not thrilled during this time. I am a believer in John Locke and that he may somehow still play a key (and good) role on the island.

  1. i posted a similar post to this, but on hindsight y would jacob let himself be killed was my thought??? but as for people brought to the island for a reason i do agree but obviously there are contradictions for example if jacob is hel bent in stopping MIB why would he bring john locke to the island when he knew he would be the one who ended up killing him?? but i really believe te candidates are not candidates as such but they do have their own role sayid did shoot ben wen back in time this led him to the other and therefore STAY on the island rather than leave as in the flash sideways, and ben is needed on the island as he sets the island in motion by sinning the wheelcogthingymabob also kwon is also now needed to lead whidmoore to the pockets of magnatism written in his language and so on

  2. That all seems to make sense. In my eyes, Jacob could be up to 1 of 3 things.

1- Jacob could’ve brought those specific people to the island to be the new “fathers” of humanity. When the world ends, the island remains, and it’s up to those people to repopulate the planet. It’s a little far-fetched considering there are not many women…. But, look at the bloodlines here. I still think it’s crazy that Christian is the father of two losties, and has met up with quite a few others prior to the initial crash. Other losties also have very influential and wealthy relatives off the island.

2- Your idea. Everyone aside from Jack has the sole purpose of getting Jack to comply with Jacob’s intentions, causing him to WANT to become the new island leader. I just don’t see how this would be a very “epic” ending though. Jack becomes the new leader of the island, and more island drama continues for decades until Jack needs a new replacement. There’s just not much closure there.

3- Perhaps Jacob is from the future, is somehow related to Christian (who I still think is playing a HUGE part in all this), perhaps Jacob is Christian’s great grandson or something, and Jack and company need to survive the end of the world by being on the island in order for Jacob to be born someday. Also a very stupid idea, I’ll admit.

I believe Jacob’s true intentions have yet
to be seen. I also bet Christian is pulling the strings to a certain extent.

This is a good mystery though and has potential to be a good discussion.

  3. Inquisitor, Jacob has not selected a ‘recruit’ from the candidates that are available. Nemesis is recruiting from the same ‘pool’ as Jacob.

Jacob was watching the candidates all of their lives before bringing them to ‘the island’. That is not to say that he already knows the future. This was illustrated prior to Ben killing Jacob. Jacob told Ben that he still had a ‘choice’ in the matter.

Jacob is all about ‘free choice’ in terms of the candidates making up their own minds. Therefore, Jacob does not know who will make what choices beforehand.

In terms of Jacob’s and Nemesis’ knowledge, I believe they both have an understanding of the anticipated choices that will be made and each have independent plans in terms of the candidates.

Jack does seem as if he might be the ‘ideal’ recruit for Jacob, but…..

  4. @dabiatchishere, Miles told Ben that Jacob was hoping he was wrong about him, when Ben killed Jacob. Jacob saw the future, as in, replayed the same universe over and over, playing out different variables in different timelines, and in other timelines/realities, Ben would have done the same and stabbed Jacob. Jacob was hoping he was wrong in assuming Ben would “do it again”. At least that’s my theory.

I think Jacob assumed Ben would stab him, which is why he showed resignation to that fact when he was being stabbed. He knew it was going to happen in his mind, but his heart was hoping that he would be wrong and that Ben would change and choose good. Fortunately, as it turned out, Ben did choose good (in the jungle with Ilana), even if it was later on.

  5. I agree that Jacob knew the odds, Inquisitor. The fact that he was hoping that Ben wouldn’t stab him, right up until Ben did, demonstrated that Jacob still had faith in him to make the right choice.

I hope that Ben has been redeemed and will make good on that in future.

  6. Chiefof16:

    Its your option 3 right?

Jacob is from the future, he is Aaron.

I dont know why, but it makes sense. And we also know Widmore is from the future, or at least knows what is happening in the future.

All of the Lost shenanigans are basically humanity trying to stop a terrible crisis from happening.

Smokie is just destiny/fate/God trying to stop humanity chaing their destiny of self destruction. The course correction function of smokie as explained on the timelooptheory website all along

I would say it makes sense.
