Desmond is OH SO SPECIAL!

Written 15th April

Long time reader first time poster to this site. BTW: LOVES IT! So….this may not be really a ‘Theory’ but may be more of a thought just to put out there. I believe the reason Desmond is so special is because he now seems to be conscious about BOTH time lines, and to my knowledge he is the ONLY one. When Widmore blast him with the EM & he seemingly leaves (time travels/jumps through time lines) he comes back AWARE of the alternate time line. So he is the only one on the island FULLY AWARE, or so it seems, of this. And in the Alternate time line, he is the one that is also aware of the time spent on the island. I have no idea how this is going to play out, but I do think that this is an important observation as to why Desmond is so special. I hope someone on this site can run with this & elaborate on the possibilities of the outcome.
And just as a silly side note: Is it just me or does the actor who plays Desmond remind anyone of a young Dustin Hoffman? Ms Robbinson anyone?

  1. Yeah I think Desmond is now the ‘bridge’ if you like between the 2 realities, and it will be interesting to see what will happen as he goes one by one to ‘wake up’ the candidates in the alt universe.

His running over of Locke seemed shocking, but it will obviously have some kind of significance. Hurley ‘woke up’ when libby kissed him. i guess it has to be a mirrored incident. Perhaps Locke will walk again.

  2. Yeah, ditto to caps_locke’s comment above.

I started writing some theory on how Desmond, after being thrown down the well, is now straddling both timeliness more consciously. I think island Desmond was always aware, but alt Desmond was not… but after being thrown down the well he seems to act with more direction? I don’t know what I’m getting at really.

Also, I agree that this could be Locke being able to walk again– his expression/clothes and that last shot of him on the ground after being hit by the car is exactly the same as the Season 1 episode where we first learn about ol’ Mr. Locke.

  3. I was just thinking that Desmond is almost like a black hole… Because he can withstand the electromagnetic energy. Maybe he absorbs it, that’s why he doesn’t get radiation burns and die.
When black bodies heat up they turn white and let out ultraviolet radiation. That’s like what happened when Desmond was in Widmore’s wooden box… Maybe the distribution of the energy Desmond has aquired has something to do with him being able to time travel?

  4. And perhaps Desmond being able to “flash” from the Island to the ALT has something to do with wormholes.

It’s said that wormholes might be able to be crossed if exotic matter with negative energy was there to stabalize it. Exotic matter and Pierre Chang anyone?

  5. Yeah, this kind of ties into the constant thing… desmond is the constant between the two timelines. Oh and the title of your post made me chuckle 🙂

  6. If you look at Locke’s face when he’s on the pavement after just being hit by Desmond’s car, it looks like a perfect moment of “realization”. It seems that being hit by the car is Locke’s moment of realization of the original timeline (as the kiss was for Hugo).
