Smokey’s Loophole and Jacob’s Response

A comprehensive, chronological overview of Smokey’s loophole and Jacob’s response:

SM=Smoke Monster/Jacob’s brother
CW=Charles Widmore
EH=Eloise Hawking
FDW=Frzoen Wheel
EM=electromagnetic
O6=Oceanic 6

1954=Locke meets Richard during time-flash and prophesizes his own return. Time-flash a result of Ben turning the FDW, which was built by SM. SM knew Ben would do it for Locke and knew it would result in time-flash. SM needed time-flash to get Locke to talk to Richard to make Richard a believer in Locke later on.

1956=Locke is born; Richard visits, showing that he is taking Locke’s prophecy seriously

1961=Richard visits a young Locke and sees drawing of SM.
(Richard must have told Jacob about seeing SM drawing in addition to telling Jacob that he was interested in Locke and going to see him a few times; Jacob sees that Locke is the SM’s target for a loophole)

1960’s/70’s/80’s=CW is leader of the Others and speaks regularly with Jacob. Jacob, knowing that Locke is SM’s target, imparts on CW this information and what he must do to stop the SM when the time comes.

1977=Jack reassures Richard of Locke’s strength as a leader and gives Richard more reason to believe in Locke. Jacob allows Richard to believe this without telling him of SM’s intention because Jacob needs to allow the loophole to take place in order to eliminate SM for good, even though it will also result in his own death.

1991/92=Jacob orders the DHARMA purge. Richard wouldn’t do it alone and Ben did not have ability within the Others at the time to order such an action. If not at the time then certainly later on, Ben and the Others learn about the Swan as they had access to all DHARMA info after purge; they decide NOT to attack the Swan because Jacob knows he needs Desmond to live there and eventually turn the failsafe key.

1992/93=CW is exiled from the Island. Jacob told Widmore that he needs to go because preperation on the outside world for the coming war needs to be done.

2003/2004= Abaddon (through CW) motivates Locke to go on his walkabout via Oceanic 815.

2001-2004=Desmond pushes the button and turns the key, giving him the ability to withstand tremendous amounts of EM energy. Jacob needs this of Desmond because it is the only way to eliminate SM.

2004=Oceanis 815 crashes; Locke can walk again; finds his purpose on the Island. SM uses Eko to manipulate Locke back and forth, furthering Locke’s drive toward his destiny. SM uses Eko because Eko is the only other man of faith like Locke, making him the best person available to push Locke where SM needs him to go. After Eko pushes Locke where SM wants him to be, SM kills Eko as he serves no purpose to him any longer.

CW sends Naomi and the KAANA team to the Island to secure Desmond. Naomi has a photo of Desmond that CW gave her. Naomi and freighter team end up dying, failing in their mission to secure Desmond (as well as getting Ben for CW). SM secures Claire to use her to manipulate Jack later on. SM tells Locke it’s best if he didn’t tell anyone he saw her in the cabin because if he does, they’ll come looking for her, but SM wants Claire to feel abandoned to use her. He left Aaron because he didn’t need Aaron, he needs Claire to get to Jack. SM tells Locke to move the island knowing full-well that Ben will do it for him. SM built the FDW and knows that, somehow, when Ben turns it, it won’t work right and time flashes occur. SM needs the time flashes (as explained above) but also to be able to “meet himself” in the jungle with Richard and Ben after the real Locke is shot, furthering the prophecy belief within Richard and Ben about Locke.

After Locke exits in Tunisia, CW works to get him back to the Island with the O6. Ben kills Abaddon telling Locke he would have hurt him, which is true, because CW knows Locke must be dead and brought back to the Island for SM’s loophole to be completed. CW told Abaddon to kill Locke only after he had convinced the O6 to go back with him, which he failed to do. Ben kills Locke because Ben is a jerk, but it ends up working out for CW having Locke dead another way. CW needs to send Locke’s body back to the Island and this is confirmed by his ex-wife EH, telling Jack and Ben the same thing for the same reason as CW. EH was also the leader of the Others and is on the same page as CW; allowing SM to complete the loophole to eventually stop him for good once he does.

Once CW returns to the Island, he brings Desmond along with him. Zoe inquires to Jin about EM pockets on the Island because CW needs to find the Source, where the SM was born/created, the same place he can be killed/destroyed. No one goes into the Source without getting all f’ed up, except for Desmond because he is special and can handle EM energy. Jacob knew this and allowed Swan to stay after the purge because he needs Desmond to go into the Source. This is why EH tells Desmond during one of his time-flashes (in the jewelry store) that if he does not turn the failsafe key, “we will all die”. Becuase if he doesn’t turn the fail-safe key, he won’t be able to go into the Source and do what he needs to do there. CW and Zoe are not seen anywhere when Flocke and the Losties get to the sub on Hydra because CW has allowed his men and sub to be taken so that he may find Desmond and the Source and do what he needs to do.

Which brings us to where we are right now, waiting to see what will ultimately happen next. Sayid tells Jack where to find Desmond so I reckon he, with Saywer, Hugo, and Kate, will go to get Desmond and surely run into CW and Zoe there, soon followed by SM. Can’t wait to see how it all ends!

Started watching Lost in September 2009; finished Seasons 1-5 in 20 days.. my wife was not thrilled during this time. I am a believer in John Locke and that he may somehow still play a key (and good) role on the island.

  1. Hi Inquisitor, one thing we can’t underestimate is, that it was Nemesis who leads Desmond and pushes him down the well.

    Given that he was part of the original group who dug the wells on ‘the island’, and knows it’s powers, I find it curious that this is where Nemesis takes Desmond.

    This leads me to believe that Nemesis may have plans of his own regarding the well and Desmond’s powers.

    I think this will make for a very good showdown.

  2. I agree with most of this. I think Widmore is trying to get “the Light/Source” for himself though out of greed and Smokie is using Widmore to help him find it just like MIB/Adam/Jose used the men to help build the FDW.

  3. @dabiatchishere.. Nemesis pushed Desmond into the well to keep him trapped and hidden from Widmore. As he said in “Across the Sea”, they dug and dug and dug until they found something (light source where the FDW would be put). Most of the wells lead to basically nothing, and although they are close in proximity to some of the EM energy, the well that Desmond was pushed into is nothing more than a holding cell.

  4. After all, why put him in there to have him killed by Sayid the very next day? Zoe’s appearance at Flocke’s camp made him think that just holding Desmond is not going to keep Widmore at bay; but killing him would.

  5. @dabia..This is why MIB/Jose wanted Desmond killed by Sayid, he just put him in the well because he couldn’t kill him because either Des is a candidate or is “special” and special people cannot kill eachother, which is why you don’t see too much Tard on Tard crime..

  6. Hi Inquisitor, your point is well taken. My understanding of the wells are, as Lostpedia states:

    According to the Man in Black, the wells were dug by hand by an ancient civilization. These early Island inhabitants were confused as to why their compasses were acting so strangely in proximity to the energy pockets and dug the wells in an attempt to determine the cause.

    This tells me that electromagnetic energy does exist in the well. This may or may not become an issue in future, but is certainly worthy of mention and does not detract from your theory in any way.

  7. I love most of it I really do – just one single little thing.
    (Should start off by saycing I’m a Christian-believer, who do not think that all his appearences have been Nemesis)

    One thing that has really bothered me about wel….everything(it becomes in the end)
    because if it really was Nemesis in the cabin – posing as Christian(Which it sure SEEMS like) then there’s one thing that doesn’t add up – his later appearence at the Frozen Wheel.. “I Told You – to move the Island.. WHen has listening to Ben ever gotten you anywhere..?”

    Now, one thing that is clear(unlike most things Lost) is that Nemesis’ entire loophole/plan was first and foremost built on Time-Flashing…..so…had John Locke listened to Christian(Or what/whoever)
    and done what he said from the beginning
    (as far as we know-)the Wheel wouldn’t start skipping, John would have exited to Tunisia and Nemesis wouldn’t have been able to manipulate him further.

    For as we know, it’s Richard(through Nemesis) who Tells John what to do – die and so on.. Had John turned the Wheel right away, this wouldn’t have happened.

    (On a sidenote, does anyone remember Richard’s/Locke’s Compass, it created little of a paradox didn’t it – and if I’m not misstaking, Darlton promised the Compass would be adressed(and even important, I think.. Just remembered it, and wondered if anyone else does..?)

    So that the tiny detail – I love your theory, and I know you adressed it – but How would Nemesis know Ben would be the one to turn the Wheel?

    (Christian-supporter, bear in mind)
    I’m thinking that when Christian appears to John the second time, and John asks about having to die – “That’s why they called it sacrifice..”

    This could be Christian stating(though rather subtle)”Yeah, you F’ed up.. Had you done what I said, you’d be fine, but now you’ve set in motion a chain of events that requires your life in the end..”

    Like he said…When has listening to Ben ever gotten him anywhere(to the Island….in a coffin…enough said..)
