YES!!! I FOUND THE DHARMA’S SYMBOL MEANING

This is what I found after a looong search: Pierre is Chinese and high to Dharmas hierarchy so i searched Chinese symbolism and here it comes:There is a symbolism called trigrams and hexagrams which in few words is: Trigrams: The Baqua is a circular arrangement of the trigrams, traditionally printed on a mirror, or disk. According to legend, Fu Hsi found the bā gùa on the scales of a tortoise’s back. They function rather like a magic square, with the four axes summing to the same value (e.g., using 0 and 1 to represent yin and yang, 000 + 111 = 111, 101 + 010 = 111, etc.).The solid line represents yang, the creative principle. The open line represents yin, the receptive principle. These principles are also represented in a common circular symbol known as taijitu but more commonly known in the west as the yin-yang diagram, expressing the idea of complementarity of changes: when Yang is at top, Yin is increasing, and the reverse.

We all know that there is a good-bad, god-evil, yin-yang thing going on in the series. Let’s check out the 8 trigrams

And lets see the Dharma’s symbol

I KNOW…from top and to the right fire,earth,wind,heaven,water,thunder,mountain,lake.Ah the guards on the sub wore uniforms with the symbol water (that makes sense).
and now lets look the hexagrams:
The text of the I Ching is a set of oracular statements represented by a set of 64 abstract line arrangements called hexagrams. Each hexagram is a figure composed of six stacked horizontal lines, where each line is either Yang (an unbroken, or solid line), or Yin (broken, an open line with a gap in the center). With six such lines stacked from bottom to top there are 26 or 64 possible combinations, and thus 64 hexagrams represented.
The first three lines of the hexagram, called the lower trigram, are seen as the inner aspect of the change that is occurring. The upper trigram (the last three lines of the hexagram), is the outer aspect. The change described is thus the dynamic of the inner (personal) aspect relating to the outer (external) situation. Thus, hexagram 04

  1. This is very nice! You are really on to something here. It must have taken you forever to research this, but it was well worth it.

    Taking all the outer trigrams of the numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 43) and their meanings this looks like a doomsday prophecy which fits with the Valenztti equation.

    4=The mountains are “enveloped.”
    8=The waters are “grouped together.”
    15=The mountains are “humbled” or destroyed.
    16=Thunder comes in “excess.”
    23=Mountains are “split apart.”
    42=The wind is “increased.”

    Sounds like some scary stuff to me… and something I would be trying to prevent if I were Dharma.

  2. e-magic, what a great find! Very interesting!

    Would you be so kind as to post the link, where you found the Yin and Yang sign, at the end of your post?

    NMB, great breakdown on the numbers! I smell disaster!

  3. Great Find E-Magic, when I looked at it I seen (from top), Fire, Earth, Lake, Heaven, Water, Mountain, Thunder, Wind.

    But either way, its pretty cool.

    Where did you find this?

  4. Okay emagic, I’m totally bugging out right now. I have off this week, so I’m sitting in my house all day rewatching lost episodes. I’m up 2 season 2 now. Anyhow, I’ve been randomly reading all the posts on the site. I have this box of feng shui chinese incense got it years ago, as a gift. Decide to lit one. I’ve never used it b4. Low and behold, the symbol you discussed above is on every wrapper. HELLO!!! I’m having a lost moment. It’s the bars, and then the octagon w/ the ying yang symbol in the middle. 🙂

  5. I cast I Ching hexagrams on a daily basis and to understand the meaning of the symbols you have to understand them in their original Chinese context Earth, Fire, Water etc have very specific meanings in that context – overall though the I Ching is about attaining balance and harmony and is intrinsically linked with Tai Chi and Qigong – I’ve never really thought they had any meaning on Lost other than the whole yin yang symbology that’s been on the show since the first season (the solid lines are yang lines and the broken ones are yin) – however the I Ching works via a principle called synchronicity (meaningful coincidence) and I think that that is the over arching theme of the show (Locke follows synchronicity and allows himself to be led by events and Jack constantly tries to impose his will on the situation) Jack is slowly learning though as you see him say maybe he was just getting in the way in a recent episode

  6. I saw this in a documentary on History at like, 3 am one morning when I couldn’t sleep. The show focused on different cultures and their ‘Doomsday Prophecies.’

    Part of the show focused on a man (can’t remember who..) that selected different hexagrams (randomly or systematically) based upon a calendar and predicted the end of the world in the year 2012; same as the Mayan Calendar from approximately the same time-period, but on different continents that had no real way to communicate.

    That could be a possible premise? I really doubt it, though. Any clue as to what I’m talking about?

  7. he somehow used the I Ching. I’m not sure how. I will check it out more when I have more time. I’m not sure if it was the intended meaning of of I Ching, but the show focused at least 20 min solely to the topic

  8. this is a excerpt from Confucius’ Doctrine of the Golden Mean (another ancient Chinese text sharing philosophies with the I Ching) which exemplifies what I mean about synchronicity and John and Jack:

    “…it is that the superior man lives
    peacefully and at ease and waits for his destiny (ming, Mandate of Heaven, fate),
    while the inferior man takes to dangerous courses and hopes for good luck.”

    willis – the I Ching is about your personal interpretation of a set text relevant to a given situation so what you’re saying is possible but it can’t make concrete predictions like that it’s just his interpretation

  9. I admit I personally don’t know ANYTHING about it. I’m just repeating what was on the show. It was HIS interpretation, not mine.
    I do think it was pretty cool that his texts show he predicted the end of the world in 2012 via a system of selecting hexagons… without any knowledge of Mayan culture. Very, very coincidental.

  10. OK… yes the Dharma symbol contains the trigrams. However… and this is a BIG however. The numbers assigned to the hexagrams are not based on any significance. You can arrange the 64 hexagrams in any way you want and assign any numbers you want to them. There are in-fact several different “official” numbering systems. The importance of the hexagrams is in their shape, not some random number.

    The 8-sided image of the trigrams is a Map of Heaven. This actually has more to do with Feng Shui than with I-Ching, although they are related. The 8 trigrams represent 8 elements and 8 directions. It is a kind of spiritual compass so to speak for finding your way under heaven. It would be like drawing a Compass Rose and placing the four elements on the drawing and saying that that represents the divine order of the world and the universe. This Chinese Confusian concept was merged with Indian Buddhist ideas. The Dharma Initiative symbol is a combination of the Map of Heaven and the Dharmachakra… the Wheel of the Law. (Known here as the Frozen Donkey Wheel) The Dharmachakra represents the 8-fold path to Enlightenment, to the release from pain that is reincarnation. The goal of Buddhists is to escape the evils of reincarnation, which creates the caste system.

    The actual I-Ching is a divination system based either on flipping a coin 6 times, or drawing 6 straws. Heads or tails of the flipped coins represent solid or broken lines, as do long or short straws. Each flip of the coin or drawing of a straw is written down as a solid or broken line. When it is done, the diviner would look at the “image” created by the 6 lines and determine how it’s meaning related to the specific question at hand. The I-Ching contains dozens of “translations” of the hexagrams for different situations although in practical use, it was probably “translated” much like Tarot Cards, with a deeply personal interpretation based on the diviner and the subject. To say that hexagram “number 42” means “x” is completely non-sensical. However, you could find meaning in the hexagram Ching (the well) as it relates to the well at The Orchid:

    “THE WELL. The town may be changed,
    But the well cannot be changed.
    It neither decreases nor increases.
    They come and go and draw from the well.
    If one gets down almost to the water
    And the rope does not go all the way,
    Or the jug breaks, it brings misfortune.”

    The show is showing 3 different religious systems at once. Christianity, with it’s focus on personal salvation and a personalized heaven. Buddhism, with it’s focus on attaining nothingness and escaping the pain of reincarnation. Egyptian religion, with a focus on ritual and attaining a reunion of the body and soul after death.

  11. I’ll take you even closer to the truth.

    Look at the Chinese symbol for octagon

    http://www.chineseinkdesign.com/Chinese-Symbol-for-octagon.htm

    Also research the Egyptian octagon method and you will find the truth behind the Dharma logo.

    Remember the keywords are:
    loops
    near perfect

    Remember you find octagons around the world, pyramids around the world

    Remember their are scared energy points on earth, with key points at the points of the octagon.

    When the island jumps, where does it jump to? Come on people you are nearly there.

    Some energy points should not be touched!!!!!!

  12. I like your ideas people.

    PS – I think the documentary Willis saw might have been on Terrence McKenna. While on an a mushroom/salvia trip, he was “enlightened” with a concept he called Time Wave Zero (which is Novelty Theory). In short, while hallucinating, McKenna mapped the I Ching into a mathematical equation principle that tracks novelty, or historical events of significance. It sounds like he’s just a stoner but the equation has proved rather cool. In fact, according to his equation, everything ends on Dec. 21, 2012, the exact same day that the Mayan calendar ends. Apparently, he was not even aware of the Mayan calender when he arrived at this date. Before he died, McKenna said he didn’t believe that the world would end on this day as many do. He thought that time will cease to be linear – which would explain why a calendar would no longer have any value. One explanation would be that it might be the day time travel is accomplished… ..another I Ching, time-travel relate.

  13. very nice work. really enjoyed this.

    as for the mayans…

    and of course i could be wrong,

    the mayan calender ending in 2012 is most likey due to the precession of the equinoxes.
    in a nutshell, there are 12 zodiac signs (13 argued) I believe we are currently in or coming upon the age of Aquarius. (like the song). one age lasts about 2,150 years. It takes about 26,000 years to move through all 12 ages.

    if you looked up at the sky every night from the same point over time you would notice the stars moving.

    so most likely since in those days they used the position of the stars to dictate many things such as seasons, vital for survival, knowing when to plant crops etc, then since the stars change every so many years they most likely would need a newer, more accurate calender, like leap year.

    2012 is when the old age ends and the next age starts, thus needing a new calender.

    no one knows when the world will end.

    all wrong.

    but if you want to get into conspiracy theory here is something interesting…
    the bible states when man wears the mark of the beast on his forehead in order to trade/buy/sell goods it will be near the end.
    The world banks number is….
    666 check out this crap,

    Dr. Eldman, the chief analyst for the European Economic Community (EEC) stated, “We are now ready to assign an eighteen digit number to every person in the entire world.”

    Mary Relfe, Ph.D., in her book, “The New Money System,” (U.S. News and World Report, establishes her credibility) has done monumental research and interviewed international bankers of the world. She has stated, “Your eighteen digital number is now in the giant super computer of Europe, just off Brussels, the headquarters of the European Economic Community in Luxembourg, and the first three digits of every person
