Maels Strom

This is old news, but it may lend credence to a theory I read the other day written by Buttercherries. You should read it too.

The writers named Miles Straume’s character the way they did because they thought it would be “cool if his name sounded like ‘maelstrom'”.

I went to Wikipedia and looked up ‘maelstrom’ and found its literal meaning is a powerful whirlpool that reaches as deep as the bed of whatever body of water.

It also has a metaphorical meaning relating to powerful or sinister forces. So strange power or turbulence.

We all know Miles is a kind of ‘maelstrom’ of feelings of resentment apparently stemming from never knowing his dad etc. It’s said that he has an empty hole in his heart that money won’t fill (imagine a whirlpool that reaches the bottom of the ocean – a hole in the sea).

My suggestion is that the maelstrom works on two levels. A personal level described above, but also a physical level that involves Miles being at the centre of the incident. Given Chang’s missing arm, his fear of two identical bunnies coming into contact with each other, his banishment of baby Miles from the island, could the adult Miles at some point come into physical contact with the baby Miles? Is this where the powerful and sinister forces hit the fan?

  1. Maccutcheon, the term has been referenced by the writers in reference to Miles.

The one point that I find very interesting is the following:

“Maelstrom” appears in diverse contexts metaphorically to make reference to different subjects or objects that suggest great chaotic or sinister forces.

Is this an indication about Miles?

  2. Miles is a know-it-all, sarcastic cynic. But he does have an air of down-to-earth-ness that I enjoy about him.

In any case, good relation to the maelstrom! I learn new things about lost on here all the time. Thanks for pointing that out.

Miles may have something to do with the incident, as I am convinced all the losties do, but I don’t think him finding his baby self is the electromagnetic disruption Chang described.

  3. I hate tossing theories out because another seems more plausible, but we have to look at what evidence we have.

Sun is trying to travel back in time to her husband, and Charlotte has already warned Jin that if Sun came back bad things would happen.

There are two Miles in existence on the same island during 77.

and theres also the possible decay of Kate’s welcome to Dharmaville… though that doesn’t really have much of an effect on the incident.

Also, Jughead was encased in concrete and buried on the island, as far as we know Sayid had a bit of trouble getting past the big concrete block in the swan. but then again… magnet.

but yeah, I like your Maelstrom theory.
