The plane did indeed crash as a result of Desmond not pushing the button. It shows in S3 or S4 Desmond secretly following Imman out of the Hatch. Here he see’s Imman take off his respirator and that he’s been repairing Desmond’s boat so he he can escape the Island and leave Desmond to push the button.
Des confronts him and pushes him back resulting into Imman bashing his head off the rocks and dying, Des quickly returns to the Hatch but is to late to entert he numbers and a ‘Hole?’ appears from which Oceanic 815 enter and crash on the beach.
After this Des does continue to enter the numbers unaware of the 815 survivors on the beach. He only finds out that he caused the crash when Des and Locke discover the Pearl station and they find a printout with “sequence fail” or words to that effect, here Des explains that he caused the crash. Hope that helps
