Lost and the Fall Of Chronopolis

This is my first post to this site and I just wanted to share an idea about where Lost may be headed. Approximately 15 to 20 years ago I read a book titled “The Fall of Chronopolis” by Barrington Bayley. Season 5 of Lost has brought back memories of this book. The story is about human society in the future where time travel is common place. The main character tries to save Chronopolis from a war with it’s enemy but actually brings the downfall of Chronopolis which results in the whole society being moved back in time and reset. Before the reset is complete it is explained that Chronopolis has exsited in this creative/destructive cycle of existance for years but each time the cycle repeats, the people and cirumstances change as the events play out again.
After season 5 of Lost we have found out that time travel is definetely affecting what is going on. I think that it will turn out that all these mysterious events on the Island have been happening over and over with the same people playing different roles each time. In the next cycle Jack and Locke may reverse roles and it is Locke who tries to stop the Swan incedent during the DHARMA days. The point I’m trying to make is that this Island’s history has been playing out over and over with only the specifics changing each time but not the overall outcome. There’s always an incedent at a DHARMA station, a plane will always crash on the Island, and the events will always reset.

  1. Pretty tight theory! I also think this is what will happen. I was going to give you an A for this, but since now I am going to go out and purchase the book and expand my mind, I will give you an A+ for broadening my horizons as well!!

PS: Maybe this is what the man in black is referencing when he says “its the same thing everytime, greed, corruption, killing” (I think that was close to what he said!!)

Maybe it is the same thing every time, and Jacob is trying to change it?!?!

  2. Achalli, I think you articulated yourself very nicely!

I also get the impression, that what we have been viewing, is likened to a perpetual loop, occurring over and over again.

However, something has changed. The screen shot of Lost at the end of the season finale is a huge clue!

    Great thoughts!

  3. Thanks for your comments. I just want to be a little more specific about the point I’m trying to make about the cycles. Each time the cycle resets or something is done to change something only the details change. The same events will happen everytime but the circumstances will always change. In the next cycle Locke may be the skeptic and Jack will be the one with faith in the Island. This is what I think is behind the idea of the course correction, what will happen will always happen somehow.

  4. Achalli, I certainly understand and have full appreciation for the concept.

I agree that events will happen every time, with only the circumstances changing, for the most part.

However, that is precisely the point of the exercise. While Charlie was fated to die, Desmond changed the manner in which he dies, and prolongs his death. By doing so, Charlie was able to make contact with Penny and bring her to ‘the island’ to rescue the ’06’.

While it would appear that the ‘whatever happened, happened theory’ stands to reason, Desmond illustrated how an outcome can be altered.

Understanding how ‘variables’ operate, (please read my theory), you can see how this can alter an outcome.

  5. Dabiatchishere, I just read your theory about variables as you suggested and found it very enlightening. I believe that I understand the point you are trying to make, that although an event in time may not be changed but the circumstances and timing of the event can be altered. Is that right?

  6. Achalli, please call me Dabs.

You got the concept of variables correct. I suspect that something did change in 1977 during ‘the incident’, but am not certain exactly what that might be, or how it will alter any future events.

The realm of possibilities are endless. I would love to see somebody theorize on what they think it might be.

We’ve heard the ‘typical’ theories, but I would like to hear something along the lines of ‘the loop’, explored, further.

What would it take, to ‘alter’ the current loop? Does it have anything to do with ‘the incident’, or with the killing of Jacob, or both? So much to ponder!

Once again, I really enjoyed your theory!
