I give you points for original thinking. This idea is no more crazy than some of the others I have read here. Not quite a theory but very fun!
And yes that was a good observation about people hiding in thickets to escape Smokey. Perhaps it has trouble distinguishing life signs apart unless they are running around. Anything that moves is fair game. If you stay immobile it considers you to be no threat.
Why it uproots trees (to my way of thinking) is that it moves around underground. The roots of certain trees are in the way and as it moves past them they go flying up into the air (seemingly exploding out of the ground).
The trees Horace is seen exploding all seem rather young to me, like saplings. Perhaps Paul and Amy were part of the gardening or grounds crew and it is his way of getting even.
Those trees are special. And not just to Mr. Smokey. I think it’s pretty common for people to mis-classify them as baobab trees, but the trees in Lost are not Baobabs. They are Figs, probably a kind of Banyan. The genus Ficus is huge and contains everything from trees to bushes to vines. The fruits are eaten, the sap makes glue and rubber, and when you hear the term “Tree of Life” pretty much no matter where you are in the world, the person means some variety of fig tree.
Sacred Figs you may have heard of:
Bodhi-Fig: The tree that Buddha sat under. Around 300 AD a Bodhi Fig was planted at a Buddhist monastery as is now the oldest living planted tree.
Sycamore: The sacred tree of Egypt is not related to the Sycamore Maple known in America or Europe, but is a fig tree.
Ashvastha: The “world-tree” of Hinduism, probably also a Bodhi-Fig.
Common Fig: The Middle Eastern fig tree was in the Garden of Eden and Adam and Even covered their genitals with it’s leaves after learning Shame (this goes into my Guilt theory).
Asheram: The Biblical “image” known to Assyrians and Babylonians as “the tree of life” was possibly the depiction of a strangler fig wrapping itself around a palm tree. The palm tree is the only tree known that can survive the strangling of a fig, which usually kills it’s host. The fruits of the two trees are dietary staples for desert peoples in that region.
In addition, the Thai/Khmer architecture on the temple the smoke drags the french men into is a break from the overall Egyptian themes. I think this ruin is meant to look like part of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is interesting because it is a temple which is actually a sort of man-made island… which is covered in banyan trees. 😉
I’ve been looking for a new demagogue! How convenient!
I think you are definitely on to something. I can’t see him blowing up trees as random! Plus, this is a theory I can actually wrap my brain around….Good skills!
