Who’s Infected ?
Granted I only started visiting Lost theories, etc. at the end of season three and have only now begun posting…
BUT-
One subject that I have not really seen tackled head on (I could be wrong and would appreciate orientation to the right post) is the notion of the mysterious infection that everyone is getting inoculated for… Claire’s baby, Desmond and Kelvin …
Rousseau’s team allegedly went crazy and she had to kill them all… And yet she was fine… Or did Ben have her kidnapped and inoculated then returned to her camp ?
And the Swan was under quarantine, yes or no? Is this linked to mysterious nose bleeds and time travel experiences, do you think.
I have no theory on this.
I was just wondering if any of you have concentrated your formidable abilities at deductive reasoning and observation on this subject… Putting together all the disparate facts and clues, have any of you published any really juicy theories?

Early on it was believed the injections were a vaccine which had something to do with ‘the purge’.
We know Des believed this to be true, because Kelvin told him he shouldn’t leave the Swan. This quarantine turned out to be a lie, to keep Des from leaving the Swan and venturing too far, or running away.
We were also led to believe this had something to do with Claire’s unborn child as well. Ben had Ethan kidnap her, and administer the shot.
In Claire’s case, it was to test to see if her unborn baby was still healthy.
As viewers, we never saw any of ‘the others’ take a vaccine, so I doubt there is any need for it, but then again….its Lost. That may change again.

Can you explain this to me with examples? Sorry, I can be really dense sometimes…
I agree with most of what you have written above, Kelvin does sell Desmond a bill of goods about the quarantine… Or seems to. But that does not mean the quarantine is not valid. Perhaps Inman is infected but does not know it. Or perhaps at the time the Swan was sealed up there was a good reason to quarantine it.
The purge was made possible because of an airborn agent. A nerve gas (like Sarin) that killed everybody at the barracks (soon to be re-christened new otherton)and perhaps had a side effect in small doses of causing hallucinations and homicidal behaviour.
If the effects of the gas (disseminated all over the island through underground lava tubes from the Tempest system) were still around in pockets that sometimes burst randomly through the earth in the shape of black gas (just speculating out loud here)… If the people who come into contact with it SEE all kinds of crazy stuff…

Andre7, I don’t feel you are being dense. Quite the contrary.
If you recall Ethan confronted Claire and Charlie one night, and he took Claire, (to the same station Juliette took Sun), and left Charlie for dead.
We learned later, (I think from Juliette), the injections were to ensure Claire’s pregnancy wasn’t in jeopardy from ‘the island’s’ effect on pregnant women. That’s my best recall.
I agree a vaccine may have been necessary for ‘the others’ to take, ala ‘The Purge’. We haven’t seen it yet, but…..
We know Kelvin believed this to be true, and that Dharma believed this as well.
What I am unsure about, is whether a cover-up story was given to Dharma by Ben to account for the deaths of the DI.
So, I’m not sure if a vaccine was really ever required, or not. It sounds like it could have been just as you have mentioned. Definitely plausible.
I feel this will be covered in upcoming episodes, as to what really happened as a result of Ben using the gas.

I will point you to the SRI LANKA video (you can find it on Lostpedia) I’m convinced there is a virus in the future that wipes out mankind. The Valenzetti Equation was predicting it (some how). Anyways, the SRI LANKA video has two parts…one Alvar Hanso talking about the Virus (which he also does in a mysterious way of rewinding an off season site) and then Thomas Mittelwork is giving a speach about how they’ve infected a villiage of people with the virus. Though ethically wrong, it’s important to save mankind, etc… Check it out, you may have some different understanding.
The nose bleed and time travel is not the VIRUS in my opinion, but the Pregnancy issue I’m guessing is a side effect
