Behind the Names

Hi everyone I’m Stephanie and I have been a fan of the site for a while, but this is my first post. I have so many theories on Lost, but not as to the plot as a whole, rather just a few bits and bobs here and there with no real backup. However I would love you guys to give me some feedback and help me debunk some of these. Thanks
I have two separate things which I’m sure have been pointed out in the past but would like to bring them up again as they become more clear and connected with each episode. I will post them as 2 separate theories. Please see ‘Desmond, The Ring, Charlie and Aaron’ post.
We all know that some/most of the characters are named after famous persons in the past or characters from stories. However when looking up the meaning of some of the main characters names, I found they have a similarity in the characters role/purpose on the show.
Locke- Meaning ‘ 1. ‘Portal for Key’? 2. The word Locke can also be defined as the ‘degree in which a wheel turns’. I also read that the better the Locke, the better the turn! 3. Can also mean ‘to prevent unauthorised using’.
Faraday- The faraday cage in a previous post was so interesting, and that a ‘Faraday Cage’ is used to protect the inside mechanics of a watch from magnets/ magnetism.
Surname Sheppard- Shephard- ‘Guides group’ or ‘provides guidance’. Both of these can be use to describe each of the Sheppard men, Jack and Christian.
Also, if anyone gets the chance please read Darren Shan-The Darren Shan Saga. I feel the whole Destiny ending can relate to the show. Will maybe post another theory on this once I get my thoughts together. Anyway in this book there is man called Desmond Tiny, which can also be seen as DES-TINY. IN which this character plays the all knowing character in the book. Could this relate to our very own Desmond Hume?
Boone- Locke says to Jack that Boone is the sacrifice needed. The word Boone can mean ‘Gift or favour’ or also ‘great benefit’
Horace- in Greek means ‘guardian’, in Latin means ‘time’. ‘Guardian of time’?
Please feel free to add to this list.

  1. The names used on Lost are definitely selected for a reason. Even if it’s just meant as a shout out for the writers favorite philosophers and scientists. We could get clues from them by looking at thier underlying meanings or they could tell us things about the personality or purpose of the character by looking at the person they’re named after.

Locke, Bakunin, Rouseau, Bentham, Burke, Hume, Cooper, Carlyle, Faraday, Hawking, Lewis… I’m sure there are more that I’m missing… Philosophers, scientists, authors…

  2. Stephanie, What an original post!

Some great information/connections on the names!

I also like the ‘Desmond’ and ‘destiny’ connection.

  3. I agree with the post and have kinda been thinking along similar lines however I have been wondering given the names that are being banded about if they are al linked to biblical/ egyptian history. Richard Alpert is RA- the creator of man. Would explain why he is always kicking about. Horus was the God of life. In terms of biblical relations Jacob was the husband of Rachael who died giving birth to Benjamin (sound Familar) Could Jacob be some manifestation of his Dad, his guilt, that is why he is surprised when John Locke hears him, so how does Richard know about him?? I am only trying to play devils advocate here. Ido not think it is coincidence in the linkae of names Aaron i also believe is Jacob’s great grandson. The symbolism is there whether it is an intentional red herring I doubt but this all links back to the start of the island and how did it all begin. I think our losties still have another time shift to go through.
