Desmond’s Constant

OK, so last night I was watching old LOST episodes, and I watched “The Constant.” It made me wonder something. Daniel said that the constant must be something the same in both times, and you must make some type of contact. So my question is, why couldn’t Daniel be Desmond’s constant? Just like w/ Penny, Desmond visited him in the past and called him in the present. So why did Desmond have to use Penny as him constant when Daniel was in both times?

Hey, I'm Mixen Dixon. I'm a somewhat nerdy teenager, being very enthusiastic about theoretical physics and computers (check me out on http://lee-soft.com/forums). LOST is one of my favorite shows. I love to figure out scientific explanations of things that occur in LOST, which is why Daniel Faraday was my fav. character until he died. Too bad.

  1. Desmond did not know Faraday before he crashed on the Island. Jack, Libby, if she was still alive, even Widmore could have theoretically been Desmond’s constant b/c he knew them before. I’m not positive, just my opinion.

  2. I think Faraday said the constant has to be something you care about, that is in the past and the future. and i figure that penny was his best option because he cares more about her then he does Charles Whitmore, Jack and Libby gave him the boat after the army… and shes dead.

  3. Desmond didn’t have to use penny as his constant, he just chose her because he cares about her more than anyone else in the world. Remember: a constant has to be something you care about. Desmond probably didn’t care much about Daniel. It would have made sense though to use Daniel because he was talking to him in both times, but i think the writers needed a way for Penny to find out that Desmond is still alive and a way for her to track him.
