Paradox and The rusty compass

They have finally filled in one of the missing pieces from earlier this season. I was wondering when John Locke told Richard that he was shot and that he needed first aid. Now the only piece missing is WHERE did the darn thing come from in the first place?

Either we are in the presence of an honest to Jacob PARADOX, or they will introduce one more element to sweep away AES’s objections to the whole compass thing.

  1. I was confused by the fact that he said something like “it still points north”. I seem to remember another incident with a compass, way back when, when someone (I think Sayid) said that either the compass was broken or north had moved. at the time, that seemed very important. but now I guess the whole concept of north moving is moot?

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

  2. Andre7, I thought this was addressed by the writers when they said, whatever you had on your person, during ‘the flashes’, automatically ‘flashed’ with you.

    Therefore, not a paradox!

  3. Lets follow the compass…

In 2007 Richard Alpert gives Locke the compass (as seen in yesterday’s episode).

John flashes back and gives Richard back the compass (“Jughead”). Richard holds on to the compass until he can show it to Locke when he is a kid in the 1960s and then holds on to it further until yesterday’s episode when he gives it back to John Locke who flashes back to 1954 to repeat the process.

We never see where the compass originally came from.

  4. A.E.S. has discussed this with Highbrow in detail in the past.
    Time loop or no?
    Iterations?
    Paradoxes?

Yesterday’s episode has only brought the subject up again.

  5. The writers did say this method was one way of avoiding paradoxes.

Also, I have always thought that a time-loop is involved, in addition to the iterations.

I always believed that the numbers, might represent the exact number of iterations, or something similar to that, but don’t know for ceertain.

  6. yeah i saw that hahah, im in the corner that if your questioning time travel, time loops and whta ever happened happened, its quite obvious to me it cant all work together, there has to be some way for things to change, therefore it isnt a paradox.

    parabollocks yes!

    haha

  8. John had the compass when he first came to the island on the plane crash…didnt he?

so he brought it on the crash….flashed….richard gave it to him and said he would need it to give to him….flash….gave it back to richard…flash….richard keeps its till 2007 when he gives it to him again

  9. i disagree henry old boy, i think weve yet to see the real importance the compass plays…

i think john locke gave it to himself at some point in order to work out how hed do whatever it is he has uphis sleeves.
