~Hello all- I just signed up and this is my first post.~

After viewing the Season 5 finale (innumerable times of course) I decided to go back and re-watch the entire series marathon-style.

  1. I totally agree with you. I also went back an watched the entire series over the last few weeks, and you are absolutely right. The writers are using various religious mythologies as a literrary tool to enhance the overall message of the enternal struggle of man between free-will vs destiny, good vs evil, god vs devil, etc. Backgammon is a perfect analogy, but the show is wrought with similar, and really interesting allegories. I find the show fascinating from this perspective.

I thought the show was going in the direction of some egypitan dieties or dark underworld gods (anubis, ametep, tawaret, etc) verses the judeo-christian god, with a little high-tech electromagnetic time travel to mix things up and keep the sci-fi fans interested. But it looks like they are going with, as you say, an “ambiguious” god vs. the “ambiguious” devil. I am afraid they will alienate a lot of sci-fi fans who don’t like Jesus mixed in with their Time Lords.

  2. amarissimus, I also think it is a huge mistake to apply any kind of labels pertaining to religion in Lost.

I find it hard to believe the writers, who are so brilliant, would place themselves in a position to offend any religion and/or viewers.

Light vs dark, Black vs White, Good vs Evil should satisfy all, and is suffice at illustrating the point.

  3. I cut myself off on my comment.

The symbolism is important to understanding the story, and in order to understand the characters, their struggles, triumphs and defeats, and beliefs are essential.

Fate, Free will and Destiny are equally important aspects, as they define the very issues that qualify the very struggle between what is good and what is evil.

It comes down to a matter of perception and addresses the fundamentals required to gain insight and understanding.

I love your theory and you are enjoying the show!

I hope to read more from you!

  4. couldn’t agree more with this infallible logic.
i congratulate you on your findings.
im impressed that the writers disgused their ultimate theme as a mere motif in their first season and even up until this point we’ve reached in the series 5 finale. sheer brilliance
