Going Deeper into the theory of Good and Evil .

I believe that the island is supposed to be in some way our world in which the two forces good (Jacob/god), and evil (mr. Evil/smokey/the devil) struggle for control.

I think there is one question to consider. While God grants the freedom of choice, does he actually influence the choices man makes?
If this were the case, then it would mean it is not free choice.
I guess I am personally wrestling with the interpretation of Jacob and his Nemesis, to determine which is good as opposed to evil.
Because the writers are so brilliant, I think it is worth looking into a bit further.
