Hatch Failsafe

In the first episode of season 3, Charlie and Locke are out looking for Eko and they come across the remains of the hatch that Desmond had just blown up. But Locke says ‘It imploded’, not exploded.

From that I would gather that it doesn’t seem like the nuke from the 70’s could be the failsafe, as some people think, because that would cause an explosion. Unless, of course, the strange electromagnetic stuff interferes with the nuke and causes it to implode.

  1. Certainly appears to be different however with the Locke situation being as it is, I wouldn’t put it past him to lie through his teeth anyway….

  2. Well I think the key is your last sentence. The energy from the drill site, could cause anything that the writers want it to cause.
With that in mind, the writers could literally go in any direction they want.

  3. I think it has to do with the magnetic part of it.

Obviously a magnet drawers metallic objects towards it, if the magnet has been tapped into under the islands surface then it would draw all metallic objects as close to it as possible ie under ground, thus giving the effect of an implosion. Thats my take on it anyway.

  4. We don’t know if the nuke that Juliet detonates explodes or implodes yet. Could be how the device goes off without killing everyone and how they know they can use it in the future as a failsafe – neutralizes the electromagnetism without the usual radiation effects
